Intel is rumored to have canceled off its Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU line

OneRaichu has spread new speculations about the Intel Core Desktop CPU family, claiming that Meteor Lake may not be available in the LGA 1851 socket. There were suspicions that Intel might cancel Meteor Lake CPUs for desktop release, and it appears that those rumours may be real. According to OneRaichu, who has previously been highly accurate with his leaks, the Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs may not ship on desktop platforms but will still be going to the mobility segment.

However, with Intel Meteor Lake-S supposedly cancelled, it appears that we will need to adjust our knowledge of the Intel Desktop Core portfolio. As a result, Intel intends to debut the Raptor Lake Refresh CPU family in 2023, which will replace existing processors with higher core clocks and an improved technology to enable better power delivery. According to the most recent roadmap, they will be compatible with all existing LGA 1700/1800 socketed motherboards. This would imply that the existing CPU socket would last three generations.

However, the LGA 1700/1800 socket will not be the only one that lasts three generations. According to rumours, the next-generation LGA 1851 socket will handle at least three generations of CPUs. Since MTL (Meteor Lake-S) is no longer in the picture, the three families we may anticipate to see on the next socket are Arrow Lake-S (ARL-S), a probable Arrow Lake Refresh, and Panther Lake (PNL-S).

The Intel 15th Generation Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs will retain the 24 cores found on Raptor Lake CPUs today. The Arrow Lake-S top die will support up to 24 cores, with 8 Performance Cores and 16 Efficiency Cores.

According to prior rumours, the range will only include Core i7 and Core i9 processors. The CPU will keep the Intel 4 (CPU) + TSMC N3 (GPU) SKU node configuration. It is claimed that the 20A node will not be included in the PC lineup.

Switching from two to three families per socket appears to be a positive move by Intel to keep the desktop battlefield hot with competition. It has also benefited the blue team in comparison to AMD. It is also stated that the Royal Cove core architecture, which is predicted to provide enormous performance and IPC increases, will not be available until the generation following Panther Lake, which is expected to be Nova Lake and will be available in 2025 or later.

According to prior sources, Intel is working on a new socket known as “V” that will handle at least two generations of desktop CPUs, Arrow Lake-S and its updates, as well as future products. This LGA 1851 socket will have dimensions similar to the existing LGA 1700/1800 socket, but will have additional pins and support for new/improved functionality.

During a recent investor call, Intel stated that its Intel 4 and Intel 3 products are progressing quite well. The 14th Gen Meteor Lake production stepping is slated to be delivered this quarter, with volume ramping in 2023, while Intel 3 is also expected to begin early production by the end of 2023.
