Intel plans to launch Wi-Fi 7 and Apple shifting to Wi-Fi 6E

According to ETNews, Intel intends to integrate its next-generation Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) technology into devices by 2024. The successor to Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax), Wi-Fi 7, offers up to 36 Gbps of data processing support along with two times faster data processing rates of 5.8 Gbps and more consistent 6 GHz bandwidth stability. Apple is about to switch its gadgets to Wi-Fi 6E in the meanwhile.

Apple hasn’t yet introduced any products that enable Wi-Fi 6E, despite it being widely predicted to do so last year along with the iPhone 13 series. With the release of the iPhone 14, that is anticipated to alter this year.

Before its release on the market in 2024, Intel expects to intensify its Wi-Fi 7 development efforts. It also intends to use its technology primarily in laptops before extending to other devices.

It’s also anticipated that a long-rumored mixed-reality headset from Apple would support Wi-Fi 6E.

It’s unclear whether Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s claim that head-mounted display devices will support Wi-Fi 6/6E, Wi-Fi 6E/7, and Wi-Fi 7 in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively, was about the company’s product plan.

With an extension into the 6 GHz band, Wi-Fi 6E offers all the features and benefits of Wi-Fi 6, including improved performance, less latency, and faster data rates for processing at 2.4 Gbps. With extra airspace beyond the current 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands provided by the new spectrum, bandwidth will grow and interference will decrease.

The adoption of guidelines by the FCC last year that open up 1,200 MHz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band for unlicensed usage in the US has paved the stage for the release of new gadgets that support Wi-Fi 6E. Along with Intel, Wi-Fi 7-based products are also being prepared for release by Qualcomm, Broadcom, and MediaTek.
