Geralt’s Knighthood: Honor Becomes a Burden

After surviving the brutal Battle of the Bridge, Geralt receives an honor he never sought: Queen Meve knights him for extraordinary valor, officially granting him the title “Geralt of Rivia”—a name he’d previously fabricated.

The Irony: What began as a self-created identity becomes legally binding reality, tying him to royal duty and political allegiance.

The Consequence: This loyalty places him in direct conflict with Nilfgaard and Emperor Emhyr’s expanding ambitions. Geralt must now choose between sworn duty to the queen and his found family—particularly Ciri.

This knighthood cements his legend but simultaneously chains him to systems he’s spent his life avoiding. For witchers who operate outside society’s rules, titles can become prisons.

Emhyr’s Deadly Plot: Using the Past to Destroy the Future

Emperor Emhyr has reached desperation. His political claim to Cintra remains shaky, and the prophecy he wishes to fulfill through Ciri continues slipping away. Believing Geralt’s survival prevents him from reclaiming his daughter, Emhyr takes drastic action.

The Assassination Plan:

Orders adviser Stefan Skellen to eliminate Geralt
Uses Renfri’s brooch—a relic from Geralt’s past
Summons a monster tied to the Witcher’s scent
Manipulates Geralt’s own history as a weapon

This manipulation reveals how deeply Emhyr understands his adversary. By weaponizing Geralt’s humanity and past connections, the Emperor strikes at the witcher’s greatest vulnerability: his capacity to care.

Ciri’s Dark Transformation: From Princess to Prisoner

Perhaps the season’s most harrowing arc involves Ciri’s complete transformation. Now living as “Falka,” she runs with a violent gang called the Rats, embracing a life of rebellion far from her royal upbringing.

The Brutal Turning Point: Mercenary Leo Bonhart, hired by Skellen, slaughters the entire Rats gang before Ciri’s eyes. He spares her not from mercy but fascination—seeing in her a reflection of his own brutality.

Bonhart’s Intentions: He wants to mold Ciri into a living weapon, stripping away any remaining innocence. This represents her darkest trial yet, forcing confrontation with the violent world she was born into.

Her arc explores the battle between identity and destiny—once a princess, now a fugitive, struggling to determine who she truly is beneath the layers of trauma and power.

Yennefer’s Mysterious Disappearance

Yennefer’s mission revolves around reclaiming control of magic and stopping Vilgefortz. After rallying mages at Montecalvo and witnessing Istredd’s sacrifice to restore portals, she makes a fateful decision.

The Vanishing: With Triss’s reluctant assistance, Yennefer opens a portal using blood magic and pursues Vilgefortz alone. She steps into a magical storm and becomes stranded in a raging sea, pulled into a vortex.

Her fate remains completely uncertain.

What It Represents:

Sacrifice for the greater good
Transformation from power-seeker to protector
Fulfillment of her promise to make the world safe for Ciri
Possible rebirth or evolution of her powers

Yennefer’s disappearance underscores her belief that peace requires tremendous personal risk—a theme central to her character development across all seasons.

The Stribog and Nimue Framing Device

Season 4 introduces an innovative narrative structure: Stribog recounting these events to young Nimue a century later. Initially just a curious child, Nimue becomes a sorceress seeking to understand her connection to Ciri’s legacy.

Why This Matters:

Transforms immediate events into legend and myth
Suggests these stories transcend their participants
Implies Nimue’s destiny may facilitate Ciri’s return
Reinforces that stories, like magic, evolve through retelling

This meta-narrative approach connects past and future, reminding viewers that The Witcher’s tales echo through generations, shaped by memory and interpretation.

What Season 5 Must Address

The finale sets up crucial questions:

Can Geralt survive Emhyr’s assassination plot?
Will Yennefer return, and if so, how changed?
Can Ciri resist Bonhart’s brutal conditioning?
How will Geralt’s knighthood complicate his mission?
What role will Nimue ultimately play?

These threads promise an explosive final season that will determine the fate of The Continent.

Where to Watch

The Witcher Season 4 and all previous seasons are streaming exclusively on Netflix, with Season 5 confirmed as the series’ conclusion.

FAQs

Is Geralt actually going to die in Season 5 based on this ending?

While Emhyr’s assassination plot using Renfri’s brooch creates serious danger, book readers know Geralt’s fate takes unexpected turns rather than straightforward death. The show has diverged from source material before, but killing its protagonist before the final season’s conclusion seems unlikely. That said, The Witcher universe doesn’t shy from brutal consequences, and Geralt may face a “death” that’s more metaphorical or temporary—perhaps involving transformation or near-death experiences that fundamentally change him. Liam Hemsworth’s recasting as Geralt also suggests the character survives to appear in Season 5.

What happened to Ciri’s powers while she’s captured by Bonhart?

The season doesn’t explicitly show Ciri losing her Elder Blood powers, but her capture by Bonhart while living as “Falka” suggests she’s either suppressing them or hasn’t fully mastered control. In the books, this period represents Ciri at her most vulnerable—physically imprisoned and psychologically traumatized, which limits her ability to access her full magical potential. Bonhart’s interest in making her a “weapon” implies he recognizes some latent power, and Season 5 will likely explore whether captivity breaks her spirit or ultimately forces her to reclaim her true identity and abilities as the key to escaping his control.
