ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

Getting a big laptop on a budget with a 16-inch display seems to be a myth these days and ASUS is the perfect company to break it by launching the Vivobook 16X last week. Starting at only ₹54,990, this is by far the most affordable 16-inch laptop in the market and clearly targets customers who love bigger screens but don’t want to spend a lot.

Yes, I am a bit late to post this review but for sure I will post the most in-depth analysis of this notebook after like 2 weeks of daily usage. Honestly, when I received the laptop I was not told the price but after launch, I got even more excited over this one because it has a very sweet price while still being efficient and powerful as well.

ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

Powered by the last-gen AMD Ryzen 5000H processors, which even in 2022, I feel is a good one to use on budget Windows laptops and here it’s the 45W drawing powerful Ryzen 5 5600H variant I received for daily usage. This is the ₹59,990 version with a 16GB version, else it’s the same as you would expect on the base variant with 8GB RAM and 512GB of SSD storage.

These new ASUS Vivobook laptops do pack in some good performance while still being affordable which I feel is a great job done by the Taiwan giant. Now, here’s is a complete review of this ASUS Vivobook 16X (2022) laptop with Ryzen 5 5600H processor and it will definitely help you make the perfect laptop choice:

Design & Build

The first look of this Vivobook 16X will give you a premium vibe even though it’s made up of plastic, it is a tad bit heavy as it’s a big laptop and weighs almost 1.8kg but because of its big form factor, it feels reasonably heavy. However, ASUS has made this laptop very solid from the outside and the body has very little flex even though it’s a plastic one.

It doesn’t use a metal lid but it’s better than a lot of other laptops you see on the market for the same price and the 16-inch chassis, though cannot be opened with one hand, feel good practically. The hinge is also strong enough to hold this big display and the body’s build quality is adequate enough to get through your entire day of work or play.

Also, ASUS has used ASUS bacterial inhibition Guard on this Vivobook 16X that inhibits the growth of bacteria by more than 99% over a 24-hour period and this is a welcome feature, especially in this pandemic. I also like the fact that the laptop can be stretched to 180 degrees totally, sometimes it’s a useful design element to have.

Overall, considering the price range and being a big laptop, the design is clean & minimalistic while the build quality is decent, cannot ask for more honestly.

Display

The biggest USP of this ASUS Vivobook 16X has to be that big 16-inch display you are getting that too with a bigger & better 16:10 aspect ratio and with ultra-slim bezels, this is more of a 15.6-inch chassis which has a 16-inch display crammed into it. That’s why thanks to more of the screen real estate the laptop makes it easier to do a lot of things in one go.

ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

Previously, at this price getting a 16-inch FHD+ display was never heard about, obviously, there are certain 14-inch and 15-inch displays to compete but I feel this one has a special appeal for those who always have loved using a bigger display. Honestly, I have been used to using smaller display laptops for a few years now and when I first started using this one it felt a bit odd to me but now every day I feel that extra display is always welcome.

I still own a Vivobook 14 Flip for my own usage and I hated the display’s brightness after I bought it for a few months, so I preassumed the display will be likewise the same on this Vivobook 16X as well. However, to my surprise, the 16-inch display here is an anti-glare one, so no weird reflections and most importantly, the peak brightness is up to 300 nits.

The increased 1920 x 1200 resolution does help during day-to-day work and even watching YouTube along with everyday binge-watching. I really did enjoy using the greater screen real estate for even casual gaming, thanks to the integrated graphics. Also, we put this display to test with our Datacolor SpyderX Pro and here are the results:

As you see in the tests, the ASUS Vivobook 16X’s display is not the best out there and if you are looking for a more colour-accurate one refer to the OLED displays from ASUS. However, the specs offered by this display are ok but always that 16-inch form factor along with a 16:10 aspect ratio is a highlight of the laptop.

For those who need a big display, this is the option you should look for because you can then sacrifice the quality of it otherwise it makes no sense if you love a more colour-accurate, rich display.

Performance

Coming to the performance, this ASUS Vivobook 16X is powered by the 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 5600H processor that does give significant performance bumps thanks to the increased TDP. In this price range, having this APU does help to give a good performance on a daily basis and in my 2 weeks of usage never did I face any lag or choppiness even with multiple applications open.

ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

This AMD processor paired with 16GB RAM is great for office use, education and even casual gaming as the iGPU is capable enough to handle 720p triple-A gaming and 1080p battle royal games. The bigger display does help you to utilize the most of this performance and later if the Ryzen 7 5800H variant comes to market, I am sure that would be an instant hit.

Obviously, for the price you cannot expect a high-speed SSD but the 512GB Gen 3 SSD is decent enough for everyday usage. In terms of the overall performance of this Vivobook 16X, for this price you cannot ask for more and if you are curious to see benchmarks, here are some of them:

As you see in the wide range of benchmarks, this ASUS VivoBook 16X with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H and 16GB of RAM does perform much better than we expected it to be. It sometimes out beats the recently reviewed Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Carbon with Ryzen 7 5800U and that’s great considering the fact that this last costs 1/3rd of the Lenovo laptop.

It almost matches the performance of a high-end Acer Nitro 5 with the same Ryzen 5 5600H and this in fact tells you how good but understated this laptop is. The Vivobook 16X is very efficient as well, thanks to its optimizations, when you keep it in the balanced mode you hear no noise and most of the time the laptop stays cool.

ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

As you see in the SSD speed test, the 512GB PCI Gen 3 SSD managed to pull up to 1764 MB/s speed for read, which is decent and write speeds up to 1160 MB/s, again not bad for the price.

Big thumbs up on the performance front and even for a heavy user like me this base Ryzen 5 5600H powered Vivobook 16X easily sufficed in my day-to-day usage.

Thermals & Upgradability

ASUS has really worked in terms of cooling because even though it’s a budget laptop, the increased chassis does help to cool it effortlessly and though has a single fan it’s silent most of the time. Only during casual gaming or in performance mode I did feel the fan spinning but not every audible normally and it didn’t get heated up much, only when I played games.

Though the ASUS Vivobook 16X is a budget laptop the Taiwanese giant has kept nothing unturned when it comes to upgradability because it is proving two accessible RAM slots and so you can expand up to 24GB easily. This is a great step to keep your laptop usable for a lot of years down the line and the storage is upgradable as well.

I/O & Connectivity

Coming to the I/O of this Vivobook 16X, there are actually a lot of ports because of a bigger design to accommodate a lot of them. You have one USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port on the right-hand side where you will see a maximum of the ports, there are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports – one on the left and one on the right, along with a USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, and an audio combo jack.

I am surprised to see ASUS use the latest connectivity options on the Vivobook 16X as you have both the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. There were never any issues in terms of connectivity as the laptop easily connected to Wi-Fi and gave me the best speeds always. Also, as I connect a lot of Bluetooth devices simultaneously, I never faced any issues connecting my mouse, headphones and other accessories all at once.

Keyboard & Trackpad

Having a bigger chassis means, you do get a bigger full-size backlit keyboard with a number pad which is indeed a big deal for this price range. Obviously, these are plastic keycaps but are indeed comfortable to type on, feels more of a premium membrane keyboard to me, and as I type the review of this Vivobook 16X on the same, the typing experience is good.

The interesting fact is, thanks to a large area available, ASUS could cram in a big trackpad onto the Vivobook 16X which for a lot of people will be game-changing who love to use bigger trackpads on laptops. Obviously, it’s not the best glass trackpad you see on an Apple laptop but still a decent plastic trackpad which is very functional for daily usage.

Audio & Webcam

ASUS boasts to have great speakers on this Vivobook 16X, however, it’s decent not too loud which I feel is a weak point but most laptops in this price range have a similar sound, so I won’t complain much. While the webcam is again a 720p one, usable enough for the pricing and it’s good to see ASUS using a privacy shutter so that you can block your webcam when not in use.

Other Features & Software

Sometimes you expect manufacturers to skip out on a Microsoft Windows license or come with an older one without an Office license for the price but this is not the case here. ASUS is giving you both Windows 11 Home and Office 2021 licenses out-of-the-box with this Vivobook 16X. Also, the Fingerprint Reader sensor baked into the trackpad is useful for fast and accurate logins.

Also, the laptop supports hands-free Alexa voice assistant and it does really help to get things done easily and acts as a gateway to make your AIoT home connected to your laptop as well. The MyASUS app is really handy when it comes to tuning performance or extending warranty, upgrading drivers and a lot more!

Battery Life

ASUS claims that the 50WHrs battery used inside this Vivobook 16X will give you up to 8 hours of battery life and it isn’t deceiving at all. As you see in the actual usage, you can expect around 6-7 hours of battery life while working, which again is very respectable for the price and can stretch up to 8 hours with smart usage.

Also, I liked the fact that even while being a budget laptop, ASUS has supplied a 90W adapter to charge the VivoBook 16X as fast as possible. It generally takes me around 1 and a half to 2 hours to fully charge the laptop while using it but can fully be charged almost in an hour when not in usage.

Verdict

The most important part of this review has to be whether you should buy the new ASUS Vivobook 16X (2022), powered by AMD Ryzen 5000H processors or not? To my surprise, this laptop exceeded my expectation to provide the best value for a money 16-inch laptop, which again is rare for the price.

This is a very well-balanced laptop by ASUS and starting at only ₹54,990, this is a game-changing product which could often be neglected. However, the target audience for this big laptop is people who love bigger displays and do use them for work or play and even for students who love the 16-inch form factor but aren’t willing to spend a lot.

ASUS Vivobook 16X review: A perfect 16-inch laptop at a budget

As you might have seen, the display of the Vivobook 16X is pretty good with a modern 16:10 aspect ratio and the performance is also very good, considering the price, thanks to AMD. Any laptop will have its pros as well as cons but being a unique 16-inch laptop which doesn’t cost a lot, the minor cons can be neglected here.

On the thermals, connectivity, keyboard, battery life and other aspects I feel this is the most balanced laptop I have ever used, for the price this is the best 16-inch laptop to date.
