Google Chrome for Android is shifting to 64-bit

Just like our computers, smartphones also have 32-bit and 64-bit separation. Preliminarily, all the Android supported only 32-bit. But that last to 2014. With the release of Android 5.0 Lolipop, all the smartphones with this or higher OS version get the capability to support 64-bit applications.

Besides, a maximum of the SoCs has the ability to run 64-bit applications, though a few exceptions are also there. But Google previously never tried to convert its applications to 64-bit, especially the most famous Chrome Browser. As per Android Police‘s observation, Google is now changing its view and the 64-bit architecture started implementing from Chrome 85.

The currently available stable version of Chrome web version for Android i.e. Chrome 83 and the Beta version Chrome 84 are of 32-bit. The next versions Chrome Dev (Chrome 85) and Chrome Candy (Chrome 86) will be 64-bit.

The updation reflected on the Octane 2.0 benchmarks. Chrome 85 – the 64-bit version with the comparison with Chrome 83 – the 32-bit version performs a lot better. As per the reports, it is expected there is some more optimizations rather than the bit incrementation.

Besides of all, the report also claimed, the upcoming versions i.e. Chrome 85 and Chrome 86 will be released only for the Android 10 or higher level users. That means, only 8% of the Android users can be able to use the 64-bit versions. August 2021 is the target to fulfill the 32-bit to 64-bit convertson for Google.
