What to Upgrade?
Well, some weeks ago my friend Roni Mondal pinged me up and said he had an old PC with specs:
- 3rd Gen Intel Core i3
- 4GB DDR3 RAM(1333Mhz)
- 1GB Nvidia GeForce 210 DDR3
- 400W IBALL PSU
- 500GB HDD
I told him that’s pretty good… Now he wanted to play modern triple-A games with a playable frame rate… Well that sound challenging to me when I heard his budget of only around 180$ or less… Till then he could not even play games like GTA V or Batman Arkham Origins on it…

So I took the challenge and here are the changes that I did with his PC:
OS
Well 5-6 years ago 32bit OS was more famous and those were the ones that we had to install… So, an upgradation to 64 bit was very much required because 32 bit OS can use only 4GB system RAM…
Running modern games on 4GB RAM is just not enough. So a 64 bit OS allows you to use 8GB RAM and more… Well, another thing you need to see if your motherboard supports 8GB RAM or not…
If it supports then just change your OS to 64 bit one. Now you may ask will the processor support a 64 bit OS?
Yes, it will… all the Intel Core processors do support 64-bit architecture…
PSU
An old PSU might not work or just blow your computer if paired with a new Graphics card… So you need to have a minimum 450W gold rated power supply by Corsair, Circle, Cooler Master, EVGA or Thermal Lake…

Also, these type of PSUs helps to keep the temperature of your computer low… If your CPU is producing excessive heat then apply thermal paste to it or if it still doesn’t work try to install one or two CPU fans in the cabinet…
Make sure your CPU doesn’t heat up too fast while working or playing games. This will help you to push through a number of years with the same CPU…

RAM
As I mentioned earlier you have to upgrade your RAM. Don’t forget to see what is the frequency of the RAM…
In my friend’s case, it was 1333Mhz so I went for a decent 4GB RAM that has a warranty… Here is the one:
It cost around Rs.2470 (35$)…
Graphics Card
This section made me literally mad because these days getting hold of a good yet cheap graphics card is very hard… I would recommend everyone to buy a genuine graphics card for best performance…
After a lot of hunting, I came across the Zotac’s NVIDIA GT 1030 which is pretty decent and will give a huge boost to your gaming…
It will cost you around (120-150)$… The price might be different for different countries…
Well, everything is pretty good with the graphics card but if you have an old monitor then you may have to buy an adapter. It is because this graphics card doesn’t have VGA port, so you need an HDMI to VGA converter…

Performance Increase
After installing all the components there is a massive increase in the performance. My friend can now play any game on it with a playable FPS…
Here are the Cinebench R15 benchmarks:
Games with their framerates:
- Batman Arkham Origins: 66fps
- NFS Payback: 50fps
- GTA V: 45fps
- FarCry 5: 35fps
- PUBG: 30fps
- Battlefield 1: 45fps
- CS GO: 110fps
Well, I didn’t expect this kind of performance increase, but it did really happen. Also, the upgradation to 64 bit OS to pair 8GB RAM played an important role here…
Also, the dual channel 8GB RAM has helped to increase a huge performance. A 2GB GT 1030 DDR5 memory also helped to make the old one better…
