15 Year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is Doing Things Even Chris Gayle Never Did

Before IPL 2026, no batter in history had scored 550 runs or more in a T20 tournament season at a strike rate exceeding 200. The first to accomplish this feat is a 15-year-old from Rajasthan.

The Numbers That Define a Historic Season: Before Him, Nobody Had Done This

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is not merely having a good IPL season. He is producing one of the most statistically extraordinary batting campaigns in the history of Twenty20 cricket, combining a volume of runs that would be elite for a veteran with a strike rate that defies rational explanation.

His strike rate of 232.27 is almost 13% better than any other batter with 500-plus runs in a T20 tournament — the next being Abhishek Sharma, also in IPL 2026.

Three of his four half-centuries this season arrived off just 15 balls. The other took 23. In one of those innings, he continued to a 36-ball century — the third fastest in IPL history.

Chasing Gayle: The Six-Hitting Record Within Reach

Sooryavanshi has hit 53 sixes in 14 games — the second-most in any IPL or T20 tournament season ever recorded. The record belongs to Chris Gayle, who struck 59 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2012.

Before this season, only two batters had reached the 50-six mark in a T20 tournament:

Sooryavanshi has at least the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad remaining — and potentially three more matches if Rajasthan Royals reach the final. Gayle’s record of 59, set when Sooryavanshi was roughly three years old, is within reach.

The six-hitting record Gayle set in 2012 is nearly as old as the boy chasing it.

Against Pace, Against Spin, in All Conditions

What makes Sooryavanshi’s season remarkable beyond the raw numbers is its consistency across formats and contexts. Whether batting first or chasing, against pace or spin, he has attacked without inhibition.

42 of his 53 sixes have come off fast bowlers — the most by any batter in a single IPL season. For comparison, both Gayle and Russell hit 40 sixes against pace in their record-breaking campaigns. Those 42 sixes came from just 203 balls while striking at 238 against pace.

Spinners have largely been kept away — he has faced only 45 balls from slow bowlers — but he has still hit 11 sixes off them.

Yorkers represent his one area of containment, facing only nine such deliveries for nine runs. Against shorter lengths, however, no plan has worked.

From Ball One: The Instinct to Attack Immediately

Sooryavanshi does not take time to settle. He does not need to.

He has hit a first-ball six three times this season — against Jasprit Bumrah, Lungi Ngidi, and Mohammed Siraj. Three of the most respected pace bowlers in world cricket, all dispatched first ball.

Twenty of his 53 sixes have come within the first ten balls of his innings. Eleven arrived within the first five balls.

37 powerplay sixes — no other batter in IPL history has hit 30 sixes in the first six overs of a single season. His powerplay strike rate is 231.18. His middle-overs strike rate actually rises to 235.38 — meaning the lifting of fielding restrictions does not slow him down. It accelerates him.

He is also closing in on the record for most runs scored in the first six overs of an IPL season. He sits on 430 powerplay runs in 2026 — David Warner holds the record with 467 in 2016.

The Bowler-by-Bowler Breakdown

Sooryavanshi has faced 44 bowlers this season and hit 31 of them for six. Eight of those sixes came off the first delivery he faced from the bowler in question.

The most punished were Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain of Sunrisers Hyderabad — four sixes conceded each. Hinge had dismissed Sooryavanshi first ball in Hyderabad, but the return fixture in Jaipur brought four consecutive sixes from the young batter off Hinge’s first over — a first in IPL history.

Only three bowlers bowled more than five balls to him without conceding a six, and even two of those — Vaibhav Arora (six balls) and Kartik Tyagi (nine balls) — conceded three fours each.

The exceptions are instructive. Mohsin Khan of Lucknow Super Giants dismissed him twice in 12 balls, allowing only two runs. Sunil Narine held him to seven runs from eight balls. Against these two bowlers, Sooryavanshi has struck at below 160. Against 19 of the 24 bowlers who have bowled five or more balls to him this season, he strikes at over 200.

The Leg Side: His Natural Killing Ground

42 of Sooryavanshi’s 53 sixes have come on the leg side — a proportion that reflects where his most destructive shot, the pull, lives.

He has hit 20 sixes with the pull shot this season and been dismissed just once in 36 attempts at playing it — a pull shot strike rate of 419.44. Of his 583 total runs, 343 have come through the leg side at a strike rate of 306.25.

The Gayle Treble: Within Touching Distance

In 18 IPL seasons, only one player has simultaneously held the Orange Cap (most runs), hit the most sixes, and posted the best strike rate (minimum 50 balls) in a single season. Chris Gayle achieved this treble for RCB in 2011 — his debut season for the franchise.

Sooryavanshi held the Orange Cap as recently as RR’s penultimate league game before being overtaken. Depending on how deep Rajasthan Royals go in the playoffs, he could still complete the same treble — a 15-year-old matching the season Gayle produced as one of the most feared T20 hitters in the world.

It has already been an incredible season. Perhaps the most incredible season, given who is producing it. And it is not over yet.
