The Story: A Thief Turned Spy

Kim You Jung plays Lee Ga Kyeong, the top pickpocket in Gyeongseong, the city now known as Seoul. Her skills catch the attention of the independence movement, and she becomes an undercover spy who infiltrates the Japanese Government-General of Korea. It’s a dangerous double life set against the backdrop of Korea under Japanese rule, and the drama stretches the whole story across just 100 days.

Things get complicated when she becomes entangled with interpreter Kim Tae Woong, played by GOT7’s Park Jinyoung. He also goes by the name Sato Hideo and is the adopted son of the Inspector-General of Korea, the second-highest-ranking official in the administration. A spy and a man at the heart of the regime make for a charged pairing.

Inside the Preview: A Wallet Full of Clues

The newly released sneak peek of tonight’s premiere is playful and surprisingly revealing. Lee Ga Kyeong sits with her found family, happily sorting through the day’s haul. She opens a suitcase she stole earlier and is disappointed to find mostly clothes, since she was hoping for something valuable.

Her partner Inoma (Hong Sa Bin) then spots a small sack of rice at the bottom and marvels that he hasn’t seen white rice in years. Lee Ga Kyeong strictly forbids anyone from eating it, because she plans to sell it. It’s a small moment, but it says a lot about the hardship of the era.

Next comes the wallet she lifted from Kim Tae Woong that day, which holds less cash than she hoped. Inoma asks for his 10 percent cut but can’t work out the right amount, and she sighs about what he’d do without her. Inside, she finds a student ID showing he attends the University of Tokyo, which leaves her wondering aloud what such a student is doing in Gyeongseong. She also finds a pawn shop receipt and tosses it away as worthless.

Just as she thinks she’s finished, she notices the empty suitcase keeps tipping over, which suggests something hidden in its lining. That’s the hook, and it’s a good one.

Why It’s Worth Watching?

The mix of humour, danger and slow-burn romance looks promising, especially with a director known for emotionally rich storytelling. Kim You Jung also has plenty to offer fans right now, including her 10th-anniversary special Love in the Moonlight: Redrawn and her latest drama Dear X.
