“Your Life Matters More”: CJP Founder Begs Wangchuk to End His Fast

The CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar has taken an emotional turn. As climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike stretches on inside a Delhi hospital, the very movement he inspired is now pleading with him to stop.

Dipke’s Appeal

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has publicly urged Wangchuk to call off his fast, saying his life is too valuable to risk further. In a post on X, Dipke made clear the protest itself won’t stop — the sit-in at Jantar Mantar will continue until demands are met — but he wants Wangchuk to step back from personal harm.

Who’s Trying to Convince Him

Wangchuk is currently at Medanta Hospital, still on his indefinite fast even amid hospitalization. Reports indicate a delegation from the Samajwadi Party is set to meet him this evening specifically to appeal for him to break the strike. Union Minister JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh have also already met with him.

What the Protesters Are Actually Asking For

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das has laid out the group’s negotiating position clearly: they’ve offered the government two options — a meeting at Jantar Mantar itself, or at a neutral venue nearby. According to Das, the government reached out on July 20, though he pushed back on the official narrative around those talks.

CJP Ground Reality

The Bigger Picture

The CJP movement grew out of anger over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, and Wangchuk’s hunger strike sits within a long Indian tradition of using fasting as a tool of civil resistance — a method historically tied to Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent protest. Whether this latest appeal moves Wangchuk to end his strike remains to be seen, but the pressure on all sides is clearly mounting.
