X-Men ’97 Season 2 Episode 7: Is Apocalypse Really Dead? The Ending Explained

Two of the most powerful mutant villains in X-Men lore just met their end in the same episode — but before you celebrate, there’s a major twist buried in the details. Here’s what actually happened in X-Men ’97 Season 2, Episode 7, and why Apocalypse’s death might not be as final as it looks.

X-Men ’97- Overview

What Happens In The Episode

The episode splits its focus between two major storylines: the X-Men’s mission to rescue anti-mutant politician Graydon Creed from Exodus and the Acolytes of Magneto in the Savage Land, and X-Force’s search for Apocalypse’s lair beneath the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

While Exodus meets a seemingly permanent end during the Savage Land conflict, the real gut-punch comes when Cable and the X-Force team find Apocalypse’s shriveled corpse in his underground lab. Just as they process the discovery, Jubilee spots a partially burned Queen of Hearts card nearby — a signature calling card belonging to Gambit, who was resurrected as Apocalypse’s new Horseman at the end of the previous episode.

So, Is Apocalypse Actually Dead?

Almost certainly not. In Marvel Comics lore, Apocalypse has cheated death countless times by transferring his essence into new host bodies to extend his life. The desiccated husk found in this episode closely mirrors the “Apocalypse: The Twelve” storyline, where his decaying form was revealed before he moved on to a new vessel.

The card left behind strongly suggests that rather than Apocalypse resurrecting Gambit as a servant, he actually possessed Gambit’s body outright — making the “corpse” merely a discarded shell rather than a true death. The title of the next episode, “The Dead Man’s Hand,” only reinforces this theory, hinting that Gambit may now be walking around as Apocalypse’s new vessel.

This kind of villain-survives-death storytelling device is a hallmark of long-running superhero comic book narratives, where iconic antagonists rarely stay gone for long.

The Takeaway

Apocalypse’s apparent death in Episode 7 is almost certainly a misdirection — the real story may be that Gambit is now the reluctant vessel carrying En Sabah Nur’s consciousness forward, setting up a much darker confrontation as the season heads toward its finale.
