It’s a tough week for Hollywood at the Indian box office. Two high-profile international releases — the gothic romance Wuthering Heights and the action thriller Crime 101 — limped through their opening weeks with collections that can only be described as underwhelming. Despite carrying the star power of Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi, and Chris Hemsworth, neither film could crack a meaningful number in India.

About the Films & Their Lead Cast
Wuthering Heights is the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s timeless 19th-century novel, directed by Emerald Fennell (known for Saltburn and Promising Young Woman). It stars two of Hollywood’s biggest names right now:

Margot Robbie plays Catherine Earnshaw, the free-spirited, emotionally volatile heart of the story. The Australian actress is a global superstar best known for her iconic turn as Barbie (2023) and her Oscar-nominated work in I, Tonya. She brings raw intensity and vulnerability to Catherine, a character who has been interpreted countless times on screen.
Jacob Elordi plays the brooding, passionate Heathcliff — and if there’s one actor made for this role right now, it’s him. The Australian star broke out globally with Saltburn and Priscilla, and has built a reputation for playing emotionally layered, darkly charismatic men. His chemistry with Robbie was one of the most anticipated elements of this film.
Crime 101 is a high-octane action thriller headlined by Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor globally beloved as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hemsworth has been steadily building a serious action-lead portfolio outside Marvel with films like Extraction (2020) and its sequel, and Crime 101 is his latest attempt to cement that lane.
Why Did Both Films Underperform in India?
The numbers are easy to read, but the context matters. Both films were released in very limited screens across India, with virtually no localised marketing or promotional push. On top of that, they faced stiff competition from strong Indian releases dominating the same weekend. Without a wide release strategy or promotional push, even recognisable Hollywood faces couldn’t move the needle significantly.
Wuthering Heights is eyeing a final lifetime of under Rs. 5 crore, while Crime 101 is projected to close around Rs. 3 crore — modest but not entirely surprising given the circumstances.
