WTC Final Prize Money: Here’s the Cash Reward for Winning the World Test Championship

Cricket, often called the gentleman’s game, has always been about more than just runs and wickets. It’s about legacy, pride, and the pursuit of greatness. Nowhere is this more evident than in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, the ultimate showdown in the sport’s most traditional format.

But as the 2025 WTC Final approaches, there’s a new twist in the tale—one that’s making headlines around the world: the record-shattering prize money on offer. If you’re wondering, “What is the World Test Championship final prize money in 2025?”—you’re about to find out everything you need to know.

The Evolution of the WTC: From Concept to Cricket’s Grandest Stage

The ICC World Test Championship was launched to inject new life and context into Test cricket, a format cherished by purists but often overshadowed by the glitz of T20 leagues.

The WTC brought a league system, points table, and, most importantly, a grand final to crown the world’s best Test team. Since its inception, the WTC has delivered unforgettable moments, fierce rivalries, and a renewed sense of purpose for players and fans alike.

But the 2025 edition is set to be the most lucrative and competitive yet. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has more than doubled the prize pool, signaling a new era for Test cricket and ensuring that the format remains both prestigious and financially rewarding.

The Numbers: Breaking Down the WTC Final 2025 Prize Money

Let’s get straight to the numbers that have everyone talking. The total prize pool for the 2023–25 ICC World Test Championship Final is a staggering USD $5.76 million. This is a massive leap from the previous editions, where the total pool was just over $2 million.

Here’s how the prize money is distributed:

• Champions: The winners of the WTC Final will take home a jaw-dropping USD $3.6 million. This is more than double the $1.6 million awarded to the champions in both 2021 and 2023.
• Runners-up: The team finishing second will receive USD $2.16 million, a significant increase from the $800,000 given in previous finals.

This dramatic rise in prize money is not just a number—it’s a statement. The ICC is making it clear that Test cricket is not only the pinnacle of the sport in terms of skill and endurance but also in terms of financial reward.

Why the Prize Money Matters: More Than Just a Cheque

For the players, the WTC Final is about more than just the money. It’s about representing their country on the biggest stage, chasing a dream that began in childhood, and leaving a legacy for future generations. But the increased prize pool is a game-changer in many ways.

First, it ensures that Test cricket remains a viable and attractive career path, even as T20 leagues offer lucrative contracts. Second, it allows national cricket boards to reinvest in the sport—improving facilities, supporting grassroots programs, and nurturing the next generation of stars.

And finally, it adds an extra layer of excitement and intensity to the final, knowing that the stakes are higher than ever before.

The Road to Lord’s: South Africa vs Australia—A Clash of Titans

The 2025 WTC Final will be played at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, a venue steeped in history and tradition. This year, the finalists are two of cricket’s most storied teams: South Africa and Australia.

South Africa’s journey to the final has been nothing short of remarkable. They topped the WTC25 standings, thanks to a series of hard-fought victories over Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. A drawn home series against India showcased their resilience and consistency. For South Africa, this is a golden opportunity to claim their first WTC title and cement their place among cricket’s elite.

Australia, meanwhile, have once again proven why they are perennial contenders in world cricket. Their campaign was highlighted by a 3-1 triumph over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a 3-0 sweep of Pakistan at home, and impressive away wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. With a rich history of success in Test cricket, the Aussies are hungry to add another trophy to their cabinet.

What’s at Stake: Glory, Legacy, and a Record-Breaking Payday

While the USD $3.6 million winner’s cheque is headline-grabbing, the WTC Final is about so much more. The winning team will not only claim the largest prize in Test cricket history but also the honor of being crowned the undisputed kings of the longest format.

The runners-up, with USD $2.16 million, will have plenty to play for as well—pride, redemption, and the chance to inspire future generations.

For fans, the WTC Final is a celebration of cricket’s purest form. It’s five days of drama, strategy, and skill, played out on the hallowed turf of Lord’s. Every session, every wicket, and every run will be watched by millions, as the world’s best battle for the ultimate prize.

The Bigger Picture: How the WTC is Shaping the Future of Test Cricket

The ICC’s decision to double the prize pool is more than just a financial move—it’s a statement of intent. By making the WTC Final the richest Test match in history, the ICC is ensuring that the format remains relevant and aspirational in the modern era.

This investment is already paying dividends. Young cricketers now dream of playing in a WTC Final, not just the IPL or other T20 leagues. National boards are prioritizing Test cricket, knowing that success on this stage brings both prestige and financial rewards. And fans are re-engaging with the format, drawn by the high stakes and the promise of unforgettable moments.
