WPL 2025 : The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 concluded with a thrilling season, showcasing world-class cricket and exceptional performances. However, one concerning trend emerged—no Indian player secured a spot in the top three run-scorers or wicket-takers. Overseas stars stole the show, continuing a pattern seen in the past seasons of the league.

WPL 2025 : Overseas Players Dominate WPL 2025 – No Indian in Top Charts

No Indian in the Top 3 Run-Scorers

Despite playing in home conditions, Indian batters struggled to match the dominance of international players. The top three run-scorers of WPL 2025 were all overseas players, with England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt leading the charts with 523 runs. Australia’s Ellyse Perry and West Indies’ Hayley Matthews followed, with 372 and 307 runs, respectively.

The highest-ranked Indian batter was Shafali Verma, who finished fourth with 304 runs in 9 matches. Harmanpreet Kaur also performed well but could only manage a fifth-place finish with 302 runs.

Indian Players Struggling in WPL History

The lack of Indian dominance in both batting and bowling categories is not new. Since the inception of the WPL, only one Indian player has managed to top the charts in either category. In WPL 2024, Shreyanka Patil led the wicket-taking list with 13 wickets in 8 matches. Other than that, overseas players have consistently ruled the leaderboards.

What This Means for Indian Women’s Cricket

The continued dominance of overseas players in WPL raises concerns about the development of Indian players in high-pressure T20 leagues. While several Indian cricketers have shown potential, they are yet to consistently outperform international stars. This trend highlights the need for improved training, exposure, and opportunities for domestic talent to shine at the global level.

WPL 2025 showcased some spectacular performances, but the lack of Indian representation in the top charts is a worrying sign for Indian cricket. With foreign players excelling in both batting and bowling, Indian players need to step up and make a stronger impact in future editions.
