True crime rarely wraps up neatly once the credits roll. Netflix’s Worst Neighbor Ever pulls from four devastating real cases, and for anyone left wondering what happened to the people involved after cameras stopped rolling, here’s where things stand today.

Worst Neighbor Ever Episode 1: Shawna & Frances Zaayer

After welcoming her estranged childhood friend Frances Zaayer into her Kentucky home, Shawna Scott’s life turned into a nightmare of stalking and violence once Frances was evicted for destructive behavior. In 2018, Frances entered Shawna’s home and opened fire, killing Shawna’s husband Dave and leaving Shawna with severe facial injuries requiring 16 surgeries.

Episode 2: The Indianapolis Bombing

Mark Leonard orchestrated a devastating insurance fraud scheme, rigging his girlfriend’s Indiana home to explode for a payout exceeding $300,000. The blast leveled 33 homes and killed neighbors John and Jennifer Longworth. Leonard received two consecutive life sentences plus 75 years and died in prison in 2018.

Episode 3: Fear Thy Neighbor

Miles and Melina Armstead faced years of relentless harassment from evicted squatter Jamal Thomas in East Oakland, despite repeated restraining orders and police calls. In 2020, Thomas shot and killed Miles. The Armstead family later sued the city over police negligence and settled for $2.4 million in 2023.

Episode 4: The Executor

Caroline Herrling exploited elderly recluse Charles Wilding, forging power-of-attorney documents to seize his estate before his mysterious 2020 death. She later attempted to dispose of his remains, which were never recovered. Herrling pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2024 and was sentenced to 20 years plus $3.8 million in restitution.

Why These Stories Still Resonate

Cases like the Indianapolis bombing highlight how insurance-driven crimes can devastate entire communities beyond just the intended targets — a pattern well-documented in the broader history of arson committed for financial gain, which remains one of the more calculated and destructive forms of property crime worldwide.

These four stories, spanning stalking, fraud, and fatal negligence, show how ordinary neighborhoods can unravel when red flags go unaddressed for too long.
