Wonder Man Canceled: Why Disney Pulled the Plug on Marvel’s Best-Reviewed Show

Sometimes great reviews just aren’t enough. Disney+ has officially canceled Marvel’s Wonder Man after just one season — a shocking reversal that comes only months after the show was renewed for a second run

What Actually Happened in Wonder Man?

Marvel greenlit Season 2 back in March 2026, but by summer, executives quietly changed course. According to Variety, a writers’ room for the follow-up season was never even opened, and the writing team has since moved on to other projects. The cancellation came just days before co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit theatres — and reports suggest the call was made above showrunner Kevin Feige’s head.

Why Cancel a Hit Show?

That’s the confusing part — Wonder Man wasn’t a flop by critical standards. Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II even scored an Emmy nomination for his lead performance, and reviews praised its subtle, character-driven approach to the superhero genre. But Disney hasn’t confirmed viewership figures, and the show reportedly only briefly cracked Nielsen’s streaming charts before dropping off. The decision also follows disappointing returns for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, suggesting Disney+ may be tightening its belt on live-action Marvel series broadly.

What’s Next for the Characters?

Despite the cancellation, sources close to the show say Simon Williams and the rest of the cast “could still appear” in future MCU projects. Co-creator Andrew Guest reacted on social media, calling it a “beautiful show” while staying philosophical about the news. Wonder Man himself, created by Stan Lee alongside Don Heck and Jack Kirby, first debuted in Marvel Comics back in 1964 — so the character’s story is far from over, even if this particular show’s is.
