Stranger Things 5 Episode 4 Key Moments At A Glance

Does Will Have New Powers? Yes, and They’re Game-Changing

The final moments of Volume 1 show Will channeling his connection to Vecna, using telekinetic abilities to destroy attacking Demogorgons and save his friends. But here’s the twist—these aren’t Will’s own powers.

Will taps into Vecna’s hive mind, essentially hijacking the villain’s control over the Upside Down creatures. Think of it as turning the enemy’s weapon against them. The nosebleed he gets afterward? That’s the signature side effect we’ve seen with Eleven throughout the series.

The Duffer Brothers revealed this was planned from the beginning, stating it felt natural to bring Will’s story full circle after he was the first victim taken in Season 1.

The Kali Surprise Nobody Saw Coming

Remember Eight from that controversial Season 2 episode? Kali returns in Episode 4 after being captured by the military and held in their Upside Down facility. Eleven and Hopper discover her during their infiltration mission, and according to the creators, she’ll play a crucial role in Volume 2’s storyline.

What’s Really Happening to Max?

Max remains in a coma but exists within Vecna’s mindscape, trapped in a maze of his memories after dying at the end of Season 4. She teams up with Holly Wheeler, who’s also caught in Vecna’s mind, and nearly escapes when she hears “Running Up That Hill”—but the portal closes before she can break through.

FAQs

Will Vecna be defeated in Volume 1?

No. Volume 1 ends with Vecna still very much in control, having successfully breached the military zone and captured more children for his plan. Will’s new abilities level the playing field, but the final confrontation awaits in Volumes 2 and 3.

Do I need to rewatch previous seasons before Volume 1?

While not essential, Volume 1 heavily references events from Seasons 1-4, especially Will’s abduction, Max’s near-death, and Kali’s introduction. The show rewards longtime fans with callbacks that make the emotional moments hit harder—like Will’s flashbacks to building Castle Byers with Jonathan.
