Unlike shows that get open-ended renewals, “Tales from ’85” was originally given a two-season upfront order by Netflix — a common approach for animated series given how long production takes. Showrunner Eric Robles addressed the uncertainty directly on Instagram, telling fans plainly that viewership is what motivates a renewal decision — essentially asking the fanbase to help spread the word if they want more.

Season 2’s early performance looks even more concerning. It’s performing somewhat better on Kids TV charts — peaking at #2 in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico — but is notably weak in key English-speaking markets, sitting at #8 in the US, #6 in Canada, and #7 in Australia.

For a franchise built on the reputation of the mothership Stranger Things series, which typically dominates global charts for weeks at a time, these numbers suggest the spin-off faces a genuinely uphill battle for renewal unless word-of-mouth picks up significantly.

What Season 3 Would Need to Resolve?

If greenlit, Season 3 faces a tricky continuity challenge. Showrunner Robles has said the animated spin-off aims to bridge the timeline right up to the start of the original live-action Season 3, set around the opening of Starcourt Mall in summer 1985. Since Season 2 ended around Valentine’s Day 1985, a third season would need to explain why original animated characters like Nikki and Charlie — who never appear in the live-action Season 3 — mysteriously vanish from Hawkins by summer.

The Season 2 finale already set several pieces in motion: Daniel Fischer’s Upside Down threat was defeated, Mike finally asked Eleven to be his girlfriend, and Nikki is confirmed to be staying in Hawkins longer, since her mother lands a teaching job at Hawkins High — narrative threads a Season 3 would need to resolve before syncing back up with the live-action timeline.
