Why Was Jamshedpur Deducted 3 Points vs Mumbai City FC?

Following a closely contested match at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Friday, March 8th, Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

However, due to a breach of the domestic player rule by the Red Miners, they forfeited all three points, resulting in the Islanders claiming victory.

What Really Happened as Jamshedpur Was Deducted With All 3 Points vs Mumbai City FC?

In the 82nd minute, Chukwu received his marching orders after being shown a second yellow card for stamping on van Nieff, leaving Jamshedpur with ten men on the field. Despite this setback, the Red Miners continued to press for a winning goal. Silverio came close to replicating his earlier goal in the 88th minute and had another attempt in the 90th, but the Islanders’ last-ditch defending thwarted both efforts. After a prolonged nine minutes of stoppage time, the referee eventually blew the final whistle, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

This solitary point propelled Mumbai City to the top of the table, ahead of second-placed Odisha. However, their primary challenger remains third-placed Mohun Bagan, who trail the Islanders by just three points with two games in hand. Despite the commendable performance from Jamshedpur, Kratky will likely feel content to secure at least a point but may lament his team’s inability to capitalize on the eighteen minutes of numerical advantage.

The home team displayed a resilient performance against one of the league’s top sides, securing a valuable point that propels them to the 6th position in the standings. With only three points separating the six teams vying for the final playoff spot, Jamshedpur cannot afford any missteps in their remaining three games.

However, Jamshedpur’s current concern lies with the complaint filed by Mumbai City against them for fielding only six Indian players, a violation of ISL’s Rule 4.2.10. This violation occurred when Imran Khan was replaced by Alen Stevanovic following Chukwu’s sending-off in the 82nd minute. As the league has upholded Mumbai City’s complaint, Jamshedpur faced a punishment in the form of a 3-0 loss instead of the 1-1 draw initially recorded.

ISL’s Rule 4.2.10 states that each club must ensure that a minimum of seven (7) Domestic Players are fielded and playing on the field throughout each match, unless any of these players are dismissed due to receiving a red card. Failure to adhere to this regulation will lead to the imposition of a sanction, resulting in a 3-0 loss for the defaulting club in the specific match, unless the opposing team was winning or had won the match by a higher score, in which case the on-field outcome will be maintained.

ISL’s Rule 4.2.10 states:

“Each club shall ensure that at least seven (7) Domestic Players are fielded and playing on the field at all times throughout each match, except where any such domestic player(s) is dismissed as a result of him receiving a red card in the match. Failure to comply with this rule will result in a sanction of a 3-0 loss for the defaulter club in the particular match unless the opposing team was winning/has won the match by a higher score, in which case the result on the field will be upheld.”
