Why Do Kabaddi Players Rub Their Hands With Soil Before a Raid? The Grip Secret Behind the Game

Watched a kabaddi match and noticed raiders scooping up a fistful of dirt before darting across the court? It’s not superstition — it’s strategy. Why do kabaddi players rub their hands with soil before a raid comes down to one simple need: grip, and lots of it.

Kabaddi Real Reason: Grip and Control

Kabaddi is a game of sudden touches, quick escapes, and desperate tackles — all of which demand a firm hold. Sweaty palms can easily slip during a raid or tackle, costing a player the point (and sometimes the match). Rubbing soil onto the hands absorbs moisture and roughens the skin’s surface, giving raiders and defenders a much stronger grip on each other during contact.

Why Soil, Specifically?

Traditionally, kabaddi was played entirely on open mud courts, long before synthetic mats entered the sport at international events. Soil was simply always within reach — and it worked. Even today, in modern Pro Kabaddi League matches played on mats, many players stick to the habit purely for the practical grip benefit, alongside the sense of ritual it carries.

A Tradition That Outlived the Mud Court

Kabaddi shifted to synthetic mats internationally starting with the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea. Yet the soil-rubbing habit never really left — proof that some traditions survive purely because they still work. The Takeaway

It’s a small gesture with a big practical purpose — part grip trick, part ritual, and a nice reminder of where the sport truly began. If you enjoy digging into the “why” behind everyday sporting habits like this, check out more sports explainers and trivia on TechnoSports.
