Why Did Colleen Hoover Pick Tyriq Withers?

In an exclusive conversation, Hoover revealed that Tyriq Withers was on her radar from very early in the casting process. The role demanded an actor who could embody quiet emotional strength alongside athletic physicality — and Withers fit both requirements convincingly. Hoover noted that his ability to project warmth, vulnerability, and restraint simultaneously made it clear he was the right choice for Ledger.

Withers is known for his work in Atlanta, Tell Me Lies, Legacies, and most recently the 2025 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer. But there’s an extra layer to his suitability — before acting, he was an actual wide receiver on the 2017 Florida State Seminoles football team, which mirrors Ledger’s own athletic background in the story. Life imitating art in the best possible way.

Why This Casting Decision Matters to Fans

CoHo readers are famously protective of their favourite characters, and Ledger Ward ranks among the most beloved. The fact that Hoover herself was closely involved in casting decisions — and specifically vouched for Withers based on his human qualities — is exactly the kind of author involvement the fandom was hoping for. This isn’t a case of a studio picking a name; it’s a novelist who knows her character inside out identifying the one actor who feels right.
