As the holiday season reaches its crescendo and the world prepares to welcome a new year, WhatsApp has rolled out a suite of exciting, interactive features designed to make sending festive wishes more expressive and memorable than ever before. The update, aimed at enhancing communication during one of the platform’s busiest periods, focuses on injecting visual excitement into chats, Status updates, and video calls.
The Meta-owned messaging service typically sees its highest traffic volumes on New Year’s Eve, often breaking global records for both messages and calls. These new tools—ranging from dynamic sticker packs to on-screen animations—underscore WhatsApp’s commitment to facilitating global connection during key celebratory moments.
WhatsApp Animated Stickers and Status Updates: Expressing Joy Visually
For users looking to move beyond simple text messages, the centerpiece of the update is a dedicated collection of new visual assets. The platform has introduced a special 2026-themed animated sticker pack, making it incredibly simple to convey celebratory wishes in both individual and group conversations.
Perhaps most notable for visual communicators is the introduction of animated stickers to Status updates for the very first time. Users can now select a special 2026 layout and incorporate these animated elements to share vibrant, thematic greetings with all their contacts at once. This change reflects a broader trend of more expressive, visual storytelling within the app.
Key Features for Instant Wishes:
- 2026 Sticker Pack: A new set of animated stickers dedicated to New Year greetings, easily shareable in any chat.
- Status Animation: The debut of animated stickers within Status updates, complemented by a dedicated New Year’s layout.
Bringing the Party to Video Calls and Messages
Recognizing the importance of video calls for connecting families across continents, WhatsApp has also implemented spectacular effects for live calls. Users can now tap the ‘effects’ icon during a video call to trigger on-screen animations, including fireworks, confetti, and starbursts, adding a genuine sense of shared excitement to virtual countdowns.
For in-chat celebrations, a fan-favorite feature has returned: the animated confetti reaction. When users react to a message using certain celebration-themed emojis, a lively, festive animation instantly spreads across the chat screen. This small but impactful detail adds an interactive flourish to announcements and greetings.
Interactive Touches for Greetings:
- Video Call Effects: Animated fireworks, stars, and confetti effects that appear on the screen during live video calls.
- Animated Reactions: Reacting with celebration-themed emojis like the Party Popper or Confetti Ball now triggers a fun, animated confetti overlay within the chat.
Beyond Wishes: New Tools for Festive Organisation
While the focus is on celebrating, WhatsApp has also highlighted existing utility features that are particularly useful during the holiday season. The platform can serve as a robust planning tool for those organizing New Year’s gatherings or festive events.
Users are encouraged to leverage in-app functionalities to manage their celebrations, ensuring everyone is kept in the loop and planning proceeds smoothly. These logistical features complement the fun, visual updates perfectly, making the app a comprehensive hub for both connecting and coordinating.
Organise Your Celebrations:
- Events: Create an event within a group chat, pin it to the top for visibility, and track RSVPs efficiently.
- Polls: Utilise the Polls feature to quickly decide on party details, such as food menus, music playlists, or activity options.
- Live Location: Ensure guest safety and smooth arrivals by sharing live location, a practical tool for any celebratory gathering.
