What’s Next After Squid Game Season 3? Cate Blanchett Cameo Sets Up American Remake

The final season of Netflix’s global phenomenon “Squid Game” has concluded with a bang, but fans shouldn’t mourn the end just yet. Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett’s surprise cameo in the Season 3 finale has set the stage for an exciting American spin-off, proving that the deadly games are far from over.

Squid Game Season 3: Cate Blanchett’s Game-Changing Cameo

Blanchett’s character appears in Los Angeles, recruiting a homeless person to play Ddakji, the iconic slapping game that serves as the franchise’s gateway to the deadly competition. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the casting choice: “We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing”, adding that Blanchett was the perfect choice for this pivotal moment.

Squid Game: America – What We Know

The American adaptation isn’t just a remake—it’s a continuation of the Squid Game universe. The finale shows Blanchett’s recruiter exchanging knowing glances with the Front Man, suggesting a coordinated global operation that extends beyond South Korea.

Why an American Version Makes Sense

Global Success: Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched series, proving international appetite for the format.

Cultural Adaptation: American players would bring different dynamics to the children’s games, potentially featuring classic American playground activities.

Expanded Universe: The spin-off will be set in the same world, allowing for interconnected storylines and character crossovers.

Star Power: Blanchett’s involvement immediately elevates the project’s profile and attracts A-list talent.

Production Timeline and Challenges

David Fincher, already committed to multiple Netflix projects, faces scheduling challenges with “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” running from July to December, which could affect the Squid Game: America timeline. However, sources indicate production could begin as early as December 2025.

What This Means for Fans

While Season 3 marks the definitive end of the original Korean series, the American spin-off offers hope for franchise continuation. Blanchett’s cameo serves as a “potential spin-off stateside” setup, suggesting Netflix’s commitment to expanding the Squid Game universe.

The streaming giant has remained strategically quiet about official announcements, but the immense success of the three-season run has Netflix considering next steps.
