SC East Bengal will be finishing at the bottom of the ISL table due to their head-to-head record against NorthEast United. The Highlanders will be finishing second last in the table, which is also a big downgrade from their semi-final spot last year.

This will be East Bengal’s worst performance in a league in over a decade, after being mostly consistent in the I-League. The Red and Gold club has been in disastrous form this season, and we will briefly analyse the reasons why things have not worked out for them.

SC East Bengal finish last in the ISL

In a forgettable season for East Bengal, the likes of Left back Hira Mondal and forward N Mahesh Singh have emerged as beacons of hope. Will EBC look to retain these two players even if they part ways with SC?

The club started off the season with Jose Manuel Diaz, a man who has had experience in Spain. But, things did not work out for them at all right from the get-go. The team did not win a single game under the coach before he was eventually sacked in the middle of the season.

Under Diaz, there was a severe lack of defensive composure which led to the team conceding a lot. And eventually, Mario Rivera was brought back to the club to lead them for the remainder of the season. But despite getting them their first and only win of the campaign, Rivera could not turn things around.

While SC East Bengal improved defensively, they failed to score the decisive goals and maintain their composure in the big games. Their status is not the same as their time in the I-League anymore, and they will have to come back strong next season if they hope to regain their status as one of the best clubs in the country.
