Manchester United managed to defeat West Ham United 1-2 at the London Stadium in a dramatic encounter. The Red Devils went behind around the half-hour mark after Said Benrahma opened the scoring for the home team. The effort was deflected off of Raphael Varane and beat David De Gea from the edge of the box.
Cristiano Ronaldo leveled things up five minutes later, with a poacher’s goal from six yards out. The Portuguese striker’s initial effort was saved by Fabianski, but the rebound landed perfectly for CR7 who made no mistake in front of goal, with the perfect opportunity. He has now scored four goals in three games for United since making his return to the club.
The forward was extremely dangerous in the first half, and could have had more goals for United in the first half itself. However, both teams went into the tunnel with a goal each.
Late in the second half, Jesse Lingard was brought on for Paul Pogba and the Englishman made amends for his error in midweek against Young Boys. He scored the second goal for United in the 89th minute to almost win the match for his club. Lingard spent the latter half of the previous season on loan with West Ham, and the goal was difficult for fans to see as a result.
But, in the 94th minute, the Hammers were given the opportunity to level things up with a late penalty after Luke Shaw handled the ball. Mark Noble stepped up to take the penalty with his first touch of the ball after being brought on in the final minute of the game, but he was denied by David De Gea, who made a tremendous save to gain all three points for his team.
