The moment Kerala got its long-awaited name change to ‘Keralam’ from the Union Cabinet on February 24, 2026, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wasted no time. She congratulated Kerala — and in the same breath, reminded the Centre that Bengal’s own renaming proposal has been “lying buried for years.”
It’s a political moment loaded with identity, pride, and a dash of pre-election fire.
What’s the Whole Story?
The TMC government had passed a resolution to rename West Bengal as ‘Bangla’ and has raised the demand before the Centre on multiple occasions. ANI News But the Centre has remained silent — until Kerala’s approval reignited the debate.
Mamata said Bengal’s “legitimate demand” should not be denied just because the state “refused to bow before the BJP.” ThePrint She labeled PM Modi and Amit Shah as “Bangla-Birodhis” (opponents of Bangla), accusing them of lacking respect for Bengal’s heritage and language.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also weighed in, saying: “If the name of Kerala can be changed, then why not the name of West Bengal?” Rising Kashmir — giving Mamata’s demand fresh cross-party momentum.

Why Does the Name ‘Bangla’ Matter?
It’s not just semantics. The name “West Bengal” was born out of the Partition of Bengal — a colonial-era division. Renaming it ‘Bangla’ would reclaim a cultural identity rooted in language and history, much like how other Indian states have shed their colonial names over the decades.
With West Bengal Assembly elections due later in 2026, this debate will only get louder. For more on Indian political developments and state-level electoral news, check out TechnoSports for the latest updates across sports and beyond.
