West Bengal SIR 2026 — Key Facts

What Is SIR 2026 and Why Does It Matter?

SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision — a full-scale electoral roll cleanup carried out by the Election Commission of India (ECI) under Article 324 of the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.

West Bengal’s voter list had grown bloated over decades with duplicate entries, deceased voters, and names of people who had migrated to other states. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) went door-to-door across every district to verify voters’ details, and the process removed names under the ASD category — Absent, Shifted, Dead, or Duplicate.

For the first time ever, voters can be marked in three distinct categories:

• ✅ Approved — you’re confirmed and can vote
• ❌ Deleted — your name has been removed
• ⏳ Under Adjudication — still being verified by judicial officers appointed by the Supreme Court. You cannot vote until cleared.
