The most consequential voter list in West Bengal’s recent political history has just dropped. On Saturday, February 28, the Election Commission began publishing the post-SIR electoral rolls in West Bengal in phases, with hard copies of the list put up in districts such as Bankura — though it was yet to go live on official online portals at the time of initial publication. With 2026 Assembly elections approaching fast, this is the list that decides who votes and who doesn’t.

What the Three Categories Mean for You

All 7.08 crore names from the draft rolls will appear in the updated list, categorised as ‘Approved’, ‘Deleted’, or ‘Under Adjudication/Under Consideration’ — with names available for checking on eci.gov.in, ceowestbengal.wb.gov.in, and the ECI Net mobile app.

If your name shows ‘Under Adjudication’, don’t panic — but act fast. Around 60 lakh voters whose names were earlier cleared by Electoral Registration Officers are now being reviewed by Supreme Court-appointed judicial officers from West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand — 530 officers in total — scrutinising documents for discrepancies before any final deletion decision is made.

Why This SIR Matters — The Political Context

The SIR exercise is the first such statewide revision in West Bengal since 2002. Despite fierce opposition from the TMC government and INDIA bloc parties, the Supreme Court took a stringent stance and refused to allow any obstacles — extending the hearings period and pushing the final publication date from February 14 to February 28, 2026.

The Special Intensive Revision process is a constitutional mechanism allowing the Election Commission to conduct a thorough audit of voter rolls before major elections — ensuring deceased, duplicate, and untraceable entries are removed and genuine voters are protected.
