VisionQuest Just Retconned Age of Ultron’s Ending — Here’s What Really Happened

Turns out Vision never actually destroyed Ultron in Age of Ultron. Eleven years later, VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas has confirmed a major retcon that changes everything fans thought they knew about that final confrontation.

What Actually Happened in Age of Ultron, According to VisionQuest

In the original film, Vision confronts Ultron’s last drone and appears to destroy it using the Mind Stone. But Matalas revealed that instead of eliminating Ultron entirely, Vision secretly backed up the AI into his own internal systems — sparing him out of mercy rather than finishing him off.

James Spader, reprising his role as Ultron, described the character as sharper and more self-aware this time around, with a dry wit shaped by years of quiet observation inside Vision’s mind.

Why This Retcon Is a Big Deal?

Ultron was widely seen as an underused villain in his original Avengers: Age of Ultron appearance. Bringing him back gives Marvel a chance to deepen a character many felt got a one-and-done treatment. It also raises the stakes for Vision, who unknowingly carried a potential threat inside himself for over a decade — one that could either help him heal or manipulate him from within.

Whether Ultron becomes a genuine ally or the show’s true antagonist remains unclear, but it sets up one of the most intriguing dynamics in VisionQuest, premiering October 14 on Disney+.
