Vinesh Phogat : In a heartbreaking turn of events, Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of securing a silver medal at the Paris Olympics have been dashed. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected her petition to be awarded a shared silver medal after she was disqualified for being just 100 grams over the weight limit in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling final.

Let’s have a look into more details: Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat’s journey to the Paris Olympics was nothing short of extraordinary. After becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category, her hopes were cruelly dashed by a minor yet critical weight infraction. Despite Herculean efforts to meet the 50kg weight requirement, including extreme measures like cutting her hair and dehydrating herself to dangerous levels, Phogat was disqualified for being 100 grams over the limit.

This disqualification led Phogat and her team to file a petition with the CAS, challenging the ruling and seeking a shared silver medal. However, after multiple delays and much anticipation, the CAS has delivered its final verdict, dismissing Phogat’s plea and confirming her disqualification.

IOA’s Disappointment and Public Outcry

The decision has not only disappointed Phogat but also left the entire Indian sporting community in shock. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed its dismay, emphasizing that such a small weight infraction on the second day of weigh ins warranted a deeper examination. IOA President PT Usha voiced her disappointment, highlighting the implications of this decision for Phogat and the broader sporting community.

The news has sparked widespread debate and disappointment across social media, with many questioning the harshness of the decision given the circumstances. The ruling has also reignited discussions about the stringent weight regulations in combat sports and their impact on athletes.

A Career and Nation Left in Limbo

For Phogat, this verdict marks a devastating end to her Olympic journey. Following the CAS decision, she announced her retirement from international wrestling, a move that has further saddened her fans and supporters. Despite the heartbreak, Phogat is expected to receive a hero’s welcome upon her return to India, with plans for a grand celebration in her home village in Haryana.

The dismissal of Vinesh Phogat’s petition by the CAS is a sobering reminder of the unforgiving nature of competitive sports. While the Paris Olympics may not have brought her the silver medal she fought so hard for, Phogat’s legacy as one of India’s greatest wrestlers remains intact. As the nation reflects on this decision, the debate over fairness and athlete welfare in competitive sports continues to grow.
