Vilaayath Budha Review: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Rural Drama Struggles Despite Strong Performances

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest Malayalam release, Vilaayath Budha, hit theaters on November 21, 2025, generating significant buzz thanks to its star-studded cast, gritty rural setting, and adaptation from G. R. Indugopan’s acclaimed novel. While the film promises an emotionally charged experience, reviews and early audience reactions suggest that despite its intriguing premise and powerful performances, the execution may have fallen short in some key areas.

Vilaayath Budha: Film Overview & Box Office

Story & Performance

Vilaayath Budha follows the tense relationship in the forests of Marayoor, Kerala, centering on an ego-fueled clash between a teacher and his disciple over a rare sandalwood tree. Prithviraj plays “Double” Mohanan, delivering a strong, brooding performance that anchors the plot. The movie’s rural visuals, tight editing by Sreejith Sarang, and soundtrack by Jakes Bejoy enhance its rustic aesthetic.

Despite superb technical work and gripping opening sequences, some viewers feel the film falters in its pacing and writing, leaving emotional arcs underdeveloped. Critics note that, while action and drama are present, the adaptation doesn’t fully capitalize on its source material or cast’s depth, making the conflict feel repetitive.

Audience & Critics’ Verdict

• Many praise Prithviraj’s commanding screen presence and stunts, as well as the authentic setting and cinematography.
• The pacing and climax have divided audiences: Some call it emotionally charged and visually captivating, while others feel it never delivers fully on its dramatic promise.
• On social media, viewers say Vilaayath Budha is “watchable,” with notable action, but argue that it lacks the bold philosophical edge expected from an Indugopan adaptation.
