Vijay Shankar Retires From Indian Cricket After 25-Year Career

India all‑rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from Indian domestic cricket and the IPL, bringing down the curtain on a 25‑year journey in the game that took him from Tamil Nadu age‑group cricket to a World Cup appearance for India.

The 35‑year‑old confirmed his decision in a social media post on May 22, stating that he is stepping away from domestic and IPL commitments to “pursue new opportunities” and “play more cricket,” signalling an openness to freelance opportunities outside the BCCI system.

Shankar, who later moved from Tamil Nadu to represent Tripura in the 2025‑26 domestic season, played 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India between 2018 and 2019, including the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The Announcement: “Cricket Is My Life”

In his retirement message, Shankar reflected on starting cricket at the age of 10 and called the sport his life, expressing gratitude for having played “at every level and to the highest level.” He described representing India as his proudest achievement and singled out two moments he will “hold onto forever”:

• Bowling the last over in India’s 500th ODI at Nagpur, and
• Taking a wicket with his very first ball at the 2019 World Cup, against Pakistan.

He also acknowledged the criticism he has faced over the years – including the long‑running “3D player” meme that followed the 2019 World Cup selection debate – but emphasised that he has chosen to move forward in spite of “unreal hate and negativity.”

International Career For India

Shankar’s international stint was brief but eventful. A seam‑bowling all‑rounder who could bat in the middle order and bowl at decent pace, he debuted for India in T20Is in 2018 and in ODIs in 2019.

He was picked in India’s 2019 World Cup squad ahead of more established names, with selectors describing him as a “three‑dimensional player” who contributed with bat, ball and in the field – a label that later turned him into a lightning rod for online debate.

At the World Cup he memorably trapped Imam‑ul‑Haq lbw with his first ball of the tournament in the high‑pressure clash against Pakistan, but a toe injury cut his campaign short and he never regained a regular place in the national side.

International Career Summary

While those numbers look modest in isolation, they came in sporadic opportunities, often in pressure situations and unfamiliar roles. His greater body of work – and where his reputation was truly forged – was in Indian domestic cricket.

Domestic And IPL Career: A Proven All‑Rounder

Shankar’s retirement note and the BCCI tributes both underline his importance to the domestic game. The NDTV report on his retirement summarised his career statistics across formats:

• First‑class: 77 matches, 4,253 runs at 46.73 (13 hundreds, 23 fifties) and 43 wickets
• List A: 112 matches, 2,790 runs at 34.87 (2 hundreds, 15 fifties) and 73 wickets
• T20s: 159 matches, 2,583 runs at 26.09 and 38 wickets

Initially a mainstay for Tamil Nadu, he later joined Tripura for the 2025‑26 season, continuing to contribute as a senior pro in the Ranji Trophy and white‑ball competitions.

Domestic Career Snapshot

In the IPL, Shankar featured for four franchises over a decade‑long stint: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans, returning to CSK in 2025.

IPL Record

For much of that time he was valued as a flexible batting option who could float in the order and offer a few overs of medium pace – precisely the all‑round profile that is perennially in demand but rarely fully trusted at international level.

Reputation, Criticism And Perspective

Shankar’s career will always be entwined with the “3D player” tag and the social‑media storm around his selection ahead of Ambati Rayudu for the 2019 World Cup. Years later, many fans still blamed him for a decision made by selectors, something he alluded to by mentioning “hate and negativity” in his farewell note.

Yet his record tells a different story:

• A high‑class first‑class batting average near 47, with consistent run‑scoring over more than a decade.
• Key contributions for Tamil Nadu in domestic trophies and steady IPL numbers that kept him in demand across franchises.

For every meme, there is the fact that only a tiny fraction of Indian cricketers make it to the national side at all; Shankar did that, played a World Cup, and leaves with over 300 professional matches to his name.

What His Retirement Actually Means

By retiring from Indian domestic cricket and the IPL, Shankar is ending his formal association with BCCI‑run competitions. However, his explicit desire to “play more cricket” strongly hints at a shift toward:

• Overseas T20 leagues
• Franchise tournaments outside India’s regulatory umbrella
• Potential coaching or mentorship roles alongside active play

In that sense, this is less a farewell to cricket and more a pivot to the increasingly common freelance, globe‑trotting phase of a modern cricketer’s career.
