What We Know So Far
Vicky Kaushal is in advanced discussions to come on board in 4 Idiots, being considered to play the role of the “4th idiot” — joining the iconic trio of Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi.
This isn’t a cold approach either. Vicky, who has previously collaborated with Hirani on Sanju and Dunki, is said to have loved the script. Insiders suggest that his character will bring an emotional and fresh narrative alongside the original trio. The Hirani-Kaushal working relationship already has two films behind it — meaning the trust and chemistry are already established before a single scene is shot.
The buzz around this casting feels real and grounded. Multiple meetings between Vicky, Aamir, and Hirani have already taken place, and Vicky has verbally agreed to play the part of the 4th Idiot — though timelines have to align for the entire ensemble.
What’s the Story?
Aamir Khan recently confirmed the development of 4 Idiots and hinted at the storyline taking a 10-year leap from where 3 Idiots concluded — exploring the evolved lives of the beloved characters while introducing new conflicts. A decade-later reunion of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, now older and navigating the next chapter of life, with a brand-new “idiot” thrown into the mix? That’s a premise that practically writes itself — and Hirani is precisely the kind of filmmaker who will make it feel earned, not just nostalgic.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film is currently in the writing stage, with Hirani and long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi working on the screenplay — taking their time to ensure it lives up to the legacy of 3 Idiots. The second installment is expected to go on floors in the second half of 2027.
What Comes First for Vicky
Before 4 Idiots can begin, Vicky Kaushal will first wrap up his commitments for Mahavatar, which is slated to go on floors soon and will require an extensive shooting schedule. The pieces are being carefully lined up — this is a film nobody wants to rush.
3 Idiots remains one of the most beloved Bollywood films ever made — consistently ranked among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and a cultural touchstone that resonated across generations in India and beyond. The pressure to honour that legacy is real, and the team is clearly taking it seriously.
