She’s made millions laugh and cry on-screen for decades, but behind the camera, veteran actress Usha Nadkarni lives a quietly independent life — one that even her own son isn’t part of, at least not under the same roof. In an exclusive interview, ‘Usha Tai’ opened up about Usha Nadkarni’s son, why he lives apart, and how she bravely learned to live alone after years of feeling unsafe.

Why Does Usha Nadkarni’s Son Live Separately?
The answer is actually warm and practical. Usha Nadkarni’s son currently lives with her brother (his maternal uncle) in a 3BHK flat in Borivali, Mumbai. Usha explained it simply: after her brother’s building was redeveloped and he had more space, and given that her son has a small baby at home, her brother invited him over so the little one could be raised in a family environment. “Chhota bachha sabko achha lagta hai,” she said with a laugh — everyone loves having a little child around.

Usha also candidly shared that her family — her father, mother, and brother — actually raised her son in a real sense because she was always working. Her father passed away young at just 62, after which her mother stepped in as the primary caregiver for the boy.

Living Alone Since 1987 — From Fear to Freedom
What’s remarkable is how matter-of-factly Usha Nadkarni talks about solitude. She has been living alone since 1987 — that’s nearly four decades of independent life. Her daily routine is simple and grounding: she wakes up, prepares breakfast, cooks her own meals, prays, and then (she laughs) spends time scrolling Facebook.
But it wasn’t always comfortable. The Pavitra Rishta actress admitted that in the early days of moving into her apartment, she was afraid to come home late at night. She would ask the building watchman to accompany her upstairs. “Abhi aadat ho gayi. Abhi nahi darti,” she said — now she’s used to it, and the fear is long gone.
It’s a quietly powerful image: a woman who built her confidence not through grand gestures, but through years of showing up for herself, one night at a time.
