Elon Musk demanded that employees begin reporting to the Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco in an email addressed to employees on Wednesday, telling them that other Bay Area locations will not be used “for now.”
This isn’t the first time Musk has invited Twitter staff to visit the company’s headquarters. Nonetheless, this current communication represents an increase in his efforts to eliminate remote labour.
Musk’s decision is also a stark departure from the ethos set by his predecessor, Jack Dorsey, who stated in 2020 that Twitter staff will be permitted to work from home “forever.”
Musk repeated his conviction that corporate camaraderie is best developed in the office in an email to colleagues in early November with the subject line “Being There,” a reference to a 1979 satirical film. He thanked those who were already staying late at work at the time. He also mentioned that staff who were “performing at an exceptional level” could continue to work remotely.
Musk’s latest email isn’t the first time he’s directly asked Twitter’s designers and software developers to join him on the 10th floor, where he works routinely.
Musk addressed a similar request to his team in late November, adding that the 10th floor is “intended to be dense and intense.” Many of the Twitter’s engineers have already set up shop on the 10th level. Musk has also been known to conduct regular walk-throughs during which he observes personnel and occasionally questions them about the projects they are working on.
