‘Trying’ Season 5 Episode 4: Did Scott’s Big Secret Just Blow Up in His Face?

Apple TV+’s beloved dramedy Trying just delivered its most anxiety-inducing episode yet. Titled “The Hurricane,” Season 5 Episode 4 finally forces Karen’s carefully hidden secret about her husband Scott out into the open — and it does so with a mix of heartbreak and classic Trying comedy.

Trying S5: Overview

What Actually Happens in Episode 4

For most of Season 5, Karen has been hiding a wild secret: her husband Scott never actually set off to row across the Atlantic. Instead, he’s been secretly staying inside their house, hiding in the bathroom until his challenge is supposed to be over, with the story getting riskier to maintain the longer it drags on. The plan hinges on Scott making periodic reassurance calls using a satellite phone — until things go sideways. Scott slips in the washroom, strikes his head, and loses the call mid-sentence, sending the family into a panic that something has happened to him at sea. Karen rushes upstairs to find him on the floor, and a doctor later confirms he’s suffered only a mild concussion — but not before the family arrives at the house demanding proof he’s safe, only to walk away feeling betrayed once Karen’s lie is finally exposed.

Why This Episode Hits Differently

This season has been quietly building tension around whether Scott might actually die, a shadow cast by Season 4’s unresolved cliffhanger. That finale ended with Karen convincing Scott to abandon his Atlantic rowing expedition, only for him to appear to lose control of his car while driving home, cutting to Scott rowing alone at sea and leaving viewers uncertain whether he survived the crash, continued his journey, or whether the moment was symbolic.

Season 5 has since clarified the mystery in a very Trying-style twist — rather than actually attempting the row, Scott has secretly been living in the family’s cellar, having realized he’d eventually run out of supplies and, after accidentally killing a dolphin with his oars, acknowledged he was doing the opposite of what he’d set out to achieve. That absurd, deeply human resolution sets the stage for “The Hurricane,” where the lie finally starts to crumble.

Reviewers have praised the episode’s ability to balance genuine dread with the show’s signature comedic timing, with critics noting Darren Boyd’s performance as Scott has quietly become one of the ensemble’s biggest strengths this season.

What’s Next for the Filbert-Morris Family

With Kat’s return still sending ripples through Nikki and Jason’s household, and Scott’s fate now hanging by a thread of trust rather than survival, the back half of Season 5 looks set to deal with the fallout of Karen’s deception as much as any literal storm.
