Top 5 reasons for India’s poor performance in ICC T20 World Cup

Team India has failed to perform well in the previous matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. Starting from the Indian Cricketing Fraternity to the commoners who love cricket, all of them have disappointment in their eyes. There’s win and loss in every game and it should be taken sportingly. Still, we have listed some factors which may be responsible for the team’s substandard performance.

The schedule of different tournaments in a row gave zero refreshment to the players

The Indian cricket team resumed playing last year against Australia. Since then, there has been no stopping. The team continued to play home series against England, where India played 3 ODI’s, 5 T20I’s and 4 tests.  India played WTC Final and four Test matches against England prior to IPL. The players got a gap for just 10 days before the T20 World Cup commenced. The lack of rest and refreshment took a toll on players, both physically and mentally.

The “Not so wise decisions” made by team management and selectors

The selection of the players for the T20 World Cup has been a hot topic, prior to and post the tournament. Players like Deepak Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahar were left out by the team even when they had top-notch performances in recent months.

The inclusion of Hardik Pandya is questionable since he lacked proper fitness and form. Some sources suggest that it was MS Dhoni who brought him to the team for this tournament. The shuffled batting order has brought in horrific results.

Top-order failure

The failure of top-order was visible when India played against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma made no runs, KL Rahul got out scoring 3. Virat accomplished his half-century but his strike rate (116) wasn’t very appealing. In the next match against New Zealand, the order changed but the performance degraded. The trio rolled for only 14, 18 and 9 runs leaving up to much for the middle order batters.

IPL being their favourite

The members of the Indian team speak highly about the Indian Premier League and its paycheck. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have the highest packages in the league. The BCCI and the players knew about the intensity of IPL before the T20 tournament but still took no action towards it. Former cricketer Wasim Akram stated, “They think IPL is enough, not taking international cricket seriously.”

The failure of Indian bowling attack

The bowlers strived to make an impact in both matches. Pakistan had 152 to chase and they succeeded without losing a single wicket. Jaspreet Bumrah had a good performance against New Zealand as he struck twice. The other bowlers could not make an impression and the kiwis finished the game in 15 overs.
