One spear. One arm. Ninety-eight meters of pure human power. Men’s javelin throw has produced some jaw-dropping performances over the decades, but only a handful of athletes have ever cracked the sport’s true elite tier. Here’s a closer look at the top 5 furthest javelin throws in history — and the legends behind them.

5	93.07 m	Anderson Peters	Grenada	May 13, 2022	Doha, Qatar

Jan Železný — The Untouchable World Record

At 98.48 meters, Jan Železný’s 1996 throw in Jena remains the gold standard of javelin throwing, nearly three decades on. The Czech legend won three Olympic gold medals and is widely regarded as the greatest javelin thrower of all time. His world record has survived multiple javelin design changes and generations of elite throwers, and no one has come within a meter and a half of touching it.

Johannes Vetter — The Closest Challenger

Germany’s Johannes Vetter came remarkably close to history with his 97.76-meter throw in 2020, the second-farthest javelin throw ever recorded. Vetter dominated the event throughout the late 2010s, and this mark cemented him as the most serious threat to Železný’s record in the modern era. Injuries have since slowed his momentum, but this throw remains one of the sport’s defining moments.

Thomas Röhler — Olympic Gold Meets Record-Breaking Power

Thomas Röhler, another German standout, threw 93.90 meters in Doha in 2017, a performance that showcased his technical precision alongside raw strength. Röhler had already claimed Olympic gold at Rio 2016, and this throw further established Germany’s dominance in the javelin event during this golden era of German throwing talent.

Aki Parviainen — Finland’s Enduring Legacy

Finland has a storied javelin tradition, and Aki Parviainen’s 93.09-meter throw in 1999 kept that legacy alive. Set at Kuortane, a town practically synonymous with Finnish athletics excellence, this throw earned Parviainen a place among the sport’s all-time greats and remains one of the oldest marks still sitting inside the top five.

Anderson Peters — The Modern Powerhouse

Grenada’s Anderson Peters announced himself as one of the finest throwers of his generation with a 93.07-meter effort in Doha in 2022. A two-time World Champion, Peters represents the current wave of javelin talent pushing the event forward, and many believe he still has the potential to challenge marks even higher up this list in the years ahead.

Why These Records Matter

Javelin throw is one of track and field’s most technical events, blending sprint speed, upper-body power, and precise release angles. That’s exactly why these five throws stand out — each one required not just brute strength, but flawless technique executed under intense competitive pressure. It’s also worth noting that javelin specifications have changed over the years for safety reasons, making Železný’s 1996 mark even more remarkable by comparison to modern implements.
