Every year, the same question gets asked after JEE Advanced results: where do the toppers actually go? For 2026, the answer is clear. Among the top 500 rankers, IIT Bombay is still the biggest magnet by a wide margin.

IIT Choices of the Top 500 Rankers (JEE Advanced 2026)

1IIT Bombay18336.6%
2IIT Delhi11523.0%
3IIT Madras7815.6%
4IIT Kanpur499.8%
5IIT Kharagpur408.0%

Percentages are my own calculation from the figures. The numbers add up to 465, so the other 35 rankers chose institutes outside these five. The data doesn’t say which ones.

Two things stand out. First, IIT Bombay alone took more than a third of the top 500, nearly as many as IIT Delhi and IIT Madras combined (193). Second, just five IITs absorbed 93% of the very best rankers, which shows how concentrated top-rank preferences are.

Institute-by-Institute: Why Rankers Pick Them

The data shows what students chose, not why. The reasons below are commonly cited in the student community, not figures from this data.

IIT

IIT Bombay (183): The clear favourite for years. Located in Mumbai, it’s widely associated with strong Computer Science, a lively startup culture and a powerful alumni network. When a topper has a choice, Bombay is usually first on the list.

IIT Delhi (115): A solid second place. Being in the capital gives students access to internships, industry events and a growing startup ecosystem. It also has a strong reputation in both computing and core engineering.

IIT Madras (78): Known for its research culture, a very green campus in Chennai and consistently strong national rankings. Rankers who value academics and research often lean this way.

IIT Kanpur (49): A classic choice for students who want an academically intense, research-driven experience. It’s well regarded for its strong science foundation and its rigorous programmes.

IIT Kharagpur (40): The oldest IIT, set up in 1951, with a huge campus and a very wide range of departments. Its sheer breadth, heritage and alumni base keep it in the conversation every year.

What This Means for Aspirants?

If you’re preparing for JEE Advanced, don’t read this as “only Bombay is good.” The top 500 are a very small group, and their choices reflect branch preference, city, campus life and personal goals as much as brand. Every IIT on this list offers excellent education, and the best fit is the one that matches your branch, budget and ambitions.
