The league stage of the IPL 2026 ended on May 24. RCB topped the league stage and qualified for the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1, with GT, SRH and RR following the defending champions to the playoffs.

But for every Vaibhav Sooryavanshi highlight reel and every B Sai Sudharsan masterclass, there were established stars who simply couldn’t deliver. Star players and captains of a few franchises like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya had miserable outings in the IPL 2026 campaign as they failed to inspire their teams to quality performances throughout the season. Key players of Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants flopping in the IPL 2026 campaign directly impacted their teams’ performance. Here are the five biggest flops of the league stage — players whose reputations, price tags and expectations made their underperformance impossible to ignore.

1. Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) — 4 Wickets, A Record He Never Wanted

The most startling aspect of MI’s campaign was Jasprit Bumrah’s dramatic dip in returns. Across 13 games, he claimed only four wickets, recording his worst bowling average (102.50) in any IPL season he has played. The saving grace was the impressive economy rate: 8.36. Jasprit Bumrah had a forgetful outing in the IPL 2026 campaign as he could pick up just four wickets in the entire season and hardly contributed to the team’s cause. He also set an unwanted record at the end of the season as he finished the IPL 2026 campaign with an average of 102.50, which is the worst in T20 history for bowlers who have bowled 40 or more overs in a tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah had continued to rely on his wicket-taking deliveries — the slower balls and the yorkers — this season, but they have not delivered the breakthroughs. He has bowled 82 slower balls at an economy rate of 8.27, and 31 yorkers at just 3.6, but neither has brought him even a single wicket. This is also a season where he has conceded the most boundaries (43) and the joint-second-most sixes (12).

Jayawardene also revealed that Bumrah encountered “issues” with his run-up this season, which resulted in several front-foot no-balls (seven no-balls, the most by any bowler this season). It was already known that Bumrah entered the season carrying a niggle, which affected his pace in the first half of the tournament. His workload was managed as he built up his speeds. He seemed to be bowling at full tilt in the last few games, yet the wickets have not followed.

2. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants) — ₹27 Crore, Rock Bottom

Rishabh Pant experienced yet another disappointing outing for LSG, both as a captain and batter as his team failed to qualify for the playoffs and finished rock-bottom. In terms of batting, Pant scored just 312 runs in 14 matches and he has yet to justify his massive INR 27 crore price tag.

Rishabh Pant

Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant had an under par return in his 2nd season as the most expensive player/captain in IPL’s history. He managed only 312 runs at an average of 28.36 and a strike rate of 138.05 across 14 matches with his side enduring a miserable campaign, finishing at the bottom with just 8 points.

As the league’s highest-paid player at ₹27 crore, expectations for Pant are always sky-high. Unfortunately, his second season leading LSG has been defined by scratchy batting and questionable captaincy. He has averaged just 25.50 with a strike rate significantly lower than his usual explosive standard.

3. Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) — Captain, Controversy, Collapse

The MI captain was consistently in the headlines for the wrong reasons throughout the tournament and even missed a few games in between due to unknown reasons. The all-rounder managed to pick up only 4 wickets and scored 226 runs. The match summed up the Mumbai Indians’ overall campaign in IPL 2026 as they stumbled at crucial junctures, losing key moments throughout as they finished ninth among 10 teams in the points table.

MI’s batting coach Kieron Pollard admitted the team had a miserable campaign. Pollard refused to engage in thinking about what would have happened if they had done this or that, and admitted that MI were unable to play to their potential and could not string together wins even when they had recovered from a poor start.

4. Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders) — The Captain Who Couldn’t Fire In The Powerplay

The pressure around Ajinkya Rahane is no longer just about poor form. It has now become a full-blown debate about whether he is still the right man to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026.

The veteran opener was retained by KKR at ₹1.50 crore and entrusted with the captaincy for a second successive season. After a strong IPL 2025 season with consistent performances at the top, Rahane was retained by KKR for IPL 2026 at ₹1.50 crore, confirming the franchise’s trust in his role as a senior batter and leader. However, the trust was not repaid this time around.

Rahane scored 251 runs in 12 innings at an average of 22.82 and a strike rate of 130.73. While those numbers are not catastrophic on paper, the context makes them damning. Rahane is opening the batting in a season where powerplay aggression has become non-negotiable. Teams want explosive starts, fearless intent, and quick momentum inside the first six overs.

KKR, meanwhile, have repeatedly looked stuck in second gear during the powerplay, and Rahane’s cautious approach has often been at the center of that problem. His powerplay returns this season reportedly stand at just 157 runs at an average of 14.27. Those are numbers that hurt a team trying to survive in a tournament where net run rate can decide playoff qualification.

Ajinkya Rahane

KKR’s IPL 2026 campaign has been chaotic from the start. They opened the season with a horrible run, going winless in their first six matches. A late comeback with four consecutive wins briefly revived hope, but it was too little, too late.  Kolkata Knight Riders ended their IPL 2026 campaign with a 40-run defeat to Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Despite another disappointing campaign which saw KKR finish seventh with six wins from 14 games, Rahane praised the character shown by his players after a difficult start to the season. Rahane’s captaincy decisions have also come under the scanner after several close losses this season.

5. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings) — The Captain Who Couldn’t Accelerate

The CSK skipper also had a journey to forget, having scored 337 runs in 14 matches. More than the number of runs he scored, his below-average strike rate throughout the tournament is what came under the scanner. The opening batter batted at a strike rate of 123.44, which pushed the pressure on his opening partner, Sanju Samson and the other top-order batters. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored just 337 runs and was heavily scrutinized for his poor strike rate of 123.44. With him remaining out of form, CSK seemingly struggled with the 5-time champions finishing 5th with 12 points, missing out on the playoffs narrowly.

What The Flops Tell Us About IPL 2026

While MI, CSK and LSG suffered predominantly due to their batting, teams like Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were let down by their bowling and fielding.

The pattern is clear: when franchise captains and marquee signings underperform simultaneously, the damage is catastrophic. MI (9th), LSG (last) and CSK (5th) all missed the playoffs, and in every case, the failure of their highest-profile player was the central storyline.

The IPL remains a competition where star power matters — but only when those stars actually deliver. In 2026, too many didn’t.
