Tokyo Olympics to go ahead without overseas spectators

Foreign spectators may have been prohibited in Tokyo Olympics.

As per the report by Japanese news agency Kyodo, the Japanese government has decided to exclude overseas spectators from attending this summer’s Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics following the outbreak of the Corona Virus pandemic.

Though nothing is official till now, the government and the Japanese organizing committee of the Summer Games are expected to hold a meeting regarding this matter. Hopefully, the decision will be confirmed by next week.

However, if this news proved to be true, then it can cause a great loss for Japan financially as well. Already the one-year postponement of the games has caused the cost to balloon to at least $15 billion. At first, the organizing committee was expecting to make 90 billion yen from ticket sales. But if the foreign spectators are not allowed to enter then, the committee has to re-think to minimize the deficit.

Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Japanese committee told the reporters last week, “We would really like people from around the world to come to a full stadium, but unless we are prepared to accept them and the medical situation in Japan is perfect, it will cause a great deal of trouble also to visitors from overseas.”

The Olympic is scheduled to start on July 23. It will continue till 8th August. Whereas, Paralympics is between August 24 to September 5.
