StreetPass is making a comeback on Android. ThunderPass, a new app, recreates the beloved Nintendo 3DS feature that let players exchange data wirelessly with nearby devices — and it’s already turning heads among retro gaming fans and Android users hungry for nostalgic connectivity features.

Why StreetPass Matters Now

Nintendo shut down the 3DS online services in March 2023, which killed StreetPass for millions of players. That feature was deceptively simple but incredibly magical — you’d walk past another 3DS owner, and your devices would automatically swap game data, unlocking special content, bonus characters, and unique encounters.

ThunderPass brings that magic back to Android using Bluetooth proximity detection. According to The Verge, the app scans for nearby Android devices running ThunderPass and exchanges data packets automatically. No manual pairing needed. For Nintendo fans stuck without their aging handhelds, this is genuinely refreshing.

How ThunderPass Works

The original StreetPass on 3DS was always listening passively. ThunderPass copies that approach using Android’s Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol, which barely drains your battery. The app sits in the background, detecting other ThunderPass users within 30-50 meters depending on signal strength and how much interference is around.

When two devices find each other, they swap small data packets — game progress, custom profiles, or user-generated content. The whole exchange takes seconds. You don’t need accounts. You don’t need logins. Just two phones in proximity. The developer kept it lightweight, so top trending devices run ThunderPass without any performance problems.

What You Get & What’s Missing

ThunderPass supports game data syncing, profile exchanges, and custom content sharing. Early users report smooth Bluetooth handshakes and reliable data transfer. It’s free and open-source, which explains why retro gaming communities jumped on it so fast.

Here’s the catch: both users need ThunderPass installed. The original 3DS had this built into every device, so everyone was compatible. With ThunderPass, you need enough people using it. More users means more encounters, which means more fun. That’s the network effect challenge it’s facing.

Battery drain is pretty minimal — BLE is efficient by design — but you do need to keep Bluetooth on. Some users report occasional connection drops in crowded areas where wireless signals are thick.
