The Real Story Behind Netflix’s The Witness — How Alex and André Hanscombe Shaped Every Frame of This Devastating True Crime Drama

Some stories are too important to get wrong. Netflix’s upcoming three-part drama The Witness — based on the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common — is one of them. And the reason it promises to be different from your typical true crime retelling is this: the people at the heart of it were in the room the whole time.

The Witness — Key Details

Why Their Involvement as Consultants Matters

Alex and André Hanscombe had input from the very beginning, serving as consultants on The Witness and directly contributing to the companion documentary The Murder of Rachel Nickell. This wasn’t a token credit — it was a hands-on collaboration that shaped how the story was told at every level.

André has spoken about the depth of that involvement, noting that the creative team were kind enough to go over every single line with them, which he acknowledged was no easy task. He said the family will never forget that level of care.

It matters because Rachel Nickell’s murder remains one of the most disturbing and widely remembered crimes in British history — a case that was not only tragic in its violence but also deeply mishandled by authorities for years, before serial offender Robert Napper finally admitted to the crime in 2008.

What the Show Is Actually About?

Rather than focusing purely on the crime itself, the drama zeroes in on the heartbreaking aftermath — told through the eyes of Rachel’s partner André and their two-year-old son Alex, who was the sole eyewitness to the attack. As André becomes a single parent overnight, he must navigate unimaginable grief, a relentless media frenzy, and an increasingly desperate police investigation — all while making his traumatised son’s welfare his absolute priority.

Jordan Bolger (This Town) plays André Hanscombe, while Max Fincham (The Tower) takes on the role of teenage Alex. The series also features Neil Maskell, Kevin Eldon, Kerry Godliman, and Claire Rushbrook in key roles.

A standalone companion documentary — The Murder of Rachel Nickell — drops on the same day and includes previously unseen home video footage and personal archive material shared by the Hanscombe family themselves.

In Their Own Words

Alex and André described their lives as “a battle” and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to finally share their story on screen, saying they hope audiences will be left with a testament to the power of faith, hope, love — and never giving up. pinkvilla
