The Tsunami Is Still Coming — Netflix’s Florida Picks Up Where La Palma Left Off, and It’s Already Terrifying

If the volcanic eruption in La Palma left you breathless, brace yourself. Netflix has just greenlit Florida — a standalone sequel series that picks up the disaster story hours after the eruption, this time targeting an unsuspecting Norwegian community on American shores. And the wave is on its way.

Florida: Key Details at a Glance

What Is Florida About?

Florida picks up just hours after the volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, shifting the focus to a Norwegian community in Florida that is still completely unaware that a devastating tsunami is on its way. Netflix

It’s a terrifying concept: while the world reacts to the eruption, a tight-knit community goes about their daily lives — unknowing, unprepared, and directly in the path of destruction. The clock is ticking, and they don’t even know it.

Screenwriter Lars Gudmestad shared his excitement: “To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time. Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about.”

The Team Behind It

Cecilie Mosli (The Snowsister, Grey’s Anatomy) is set to direct all four episodes, with the script penned by Lars Gudmestad (La Palma, The Burning Sea). Lasse Greve Alsos and Jan Eirik Langøen will produce, alongside executive producer Martin Sundland.

The series is produced by Fantefilm — the Norwegian production powerhouse known for its “Scandisaster” productions, including La Palma itself. This is the same creative DNA that made La Palma one of Netflix’s most-watched non-English series — and it’s all coming to bear on Florida. Netflix

What Made La Palma a Global Hit?

La Palma is a Norwegian disaster drama miniseries inspired by the Cumbre Vieja tsunami hazard hypothesis and partially based on the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands. Wikipedia

The original series stars Severance breakout Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, following a Norwegian family on holiday in the Canary Islands as chaos erupts when researchers uncover signs of an imminent volcanic eruption that could trigger a catastrophic tsunami. At the time of Florida‘s announcement, La Palma was still ranking in the Top 10 of Netflix’s non-English language charts — a testament to its enduring global appeal. Deadline
