The Terror: Devil in Silver is a six-episode anthology horror series on AMC+ and Shudder, adapted from Victor LaValle’s novel of the same name. It follows Pepper, a working-class man from Queens who is wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital — an institution filled with those society would rather forget — where he faces dangerous patients, doctors with dark secrets, and perhaps the Devil himself.
Dan Stevens plays Pepper as “a reckless guy who solves things with his fists and feels that the world has been very unjust to him,” committed after losing his temper defending his girlfriend from her ex. TV Insider

The Finale Explained — What Really Happened?
In the final episode, a hurricane traps everyone inside New Hyde. Pepper goes head-to-head with the demonically controlled ghost of Dr. Walter, who is desperately searching for a new vessel as the walls of his eternal prison crumble around him. Walter’s first move is to jump into Anthony — Pepper’s estranged son — as leverage.
Faced with an impossible choice — help the devil escape the hospital or watch everyone die — Pepper absorbs the devil into his own body, freeing everyone but himself.
The finale confirms Pepper becomes the devil’s new host after agreeing to contain the entity in exchange for sparing the other patients, hospital staff, and his estranged son Anthony.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?
This isn’t just a horror finale — it’s a meditation on guilt and redemption.
Showrunner Chris Cantwell explained: “The ending always meant that there are certain sins in your life that you have to carry forever. Even if you do receive forgiveness, you’ve got to carry them — and some of them are so heavy you can’t do it alone.” The moment where Pepper says “Help me” to his son was central to director Karyn Kusama’s vision from the very beginning. \
A man who was always known for making selfish decisions ultimately chose to live with an evil voice inside his head just to protect his loved ones — and the world at large. The devil finds it almost impossible to take complete control of him, precisely because Pepper has finally learned to live for someone else.
The show’s deeper horror was always the broken system itself. As Dan Stevens put it: “Sure, we’ve got a monster roaming the ward and killing people, but the monster that is the system just does it with paperwork and overmedication and underfunding and willful neglect. It’s the same thing — just one has better PR.” Den of Geek
