What Happens in Episode 1?
The Sound of Magic Episode 1 introduces us to Yoon Ah Yi — a high school girl abandoned by debt-ridden parents, working part-time jobs while raising her younger sister and somehow staying at the top of her class. She’s carrying the weight of the entire adult world on teenage shoulders.
Then she stumbles upon a mysterious abandoned amusement park, and meets Lee Eul — an enigmatic magician played with effortless charm by Ji Chang Wook — who challenges everything she thinks she knows about growing up. His magic feels real. His words feel dangerous. And for Ah Yi, something long-dormant begins to stir.
The first episode sets the tone perfectly: it’s visually gorgeous, emotionally gut-punching, and musically exhilarating. Yes — this is a musical K-drama, and the songs hit harder than expected.
Why You’ll Be Hooked From Episode 1
The magic of The Sound of Magic isn’t in CGI or spectacle — it’s in the writing. The central question it poses from the very first frame is one all adults quietly carry: when exactly did we stop believing in magic? Ah Yi’s exhausted pragmatism versus Lee Eul’s radical hopefulness creates an instantly compelling tension.
Ji Chang Wook is mesmerizing. Choi Sung Eun’s performance as Ah Yi is heartbreakingly real. And Hwang In Yeop (True Beauty fame) adds a grounded warmth as the top student Na Il Deung who quietly notices everything.
