The Shards Premiere Ending Explained: Who Is the Trawler Really?

Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis is a horror pairing almost too perfect to be true, and The Shards‘ two-episode premiere proves it. Set in 1981 L.A., the FX/Hulu series wastes no time dropping a body, planting suspicion, and leaving viewers with one chilling question: is the new kid a killer?

What Happens in the Premiere?

The story follows Bret Ellis (Igby Rigney), a Buckley prep school senior whose tight circle — girlfriend Debbie, best friends Susan and Thom — gets upended when mysterious new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) arrives. As a serial killer known as the Trawler begins murdering teenagers across the city, Bret grows increasingly convinced Robert might be responsible. Episode 1 ends on a chilling note: a static-filled phone call, heavy breathing, and a boy begging for help.

The Shards: Overview

The Episode 2 Twist

Things escalate fast. Episode 2, “Don’t You Want Me,” reveals that Matt Kellner — a boy secretly involved with Bret — has been abducted by the Trawler. The episode closes with Bret receiving a disturbing cassette tape detailing Matt’s final, tortured moments: forced to eat live aquatic animals and injected with LSD before the tape cuts off. It’s left unclear whether Matt survives, but the outlook isn’t good.

Is Robert Mallory the Trawler?

That’s the question driving the whole season. Robert’s arrival coincides suspiciously with the killings, and Bret’s fascination with him reads as equal parts attraction and mistrust. But there’s a twist for fans of the source material: because Bret is an unreliable narrator (and the author himself, playing a fictionalized version of his own life), some theories suggest Bret could be connected to the murders without fully realizing it. The show leans into Bret Easton Ellis‘ signature blend of autofiction and dread, keeping the mystery deliberately murky.
