Mark your calendar: Episode 3 premieres on FX on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with the episode landing on Hulu shortly after. This follows the show’s now-established rollout pattern, after the series kicked off with a double-episode premiere on August 5.

The Shards Episode 3

What’s The Show About?

Set in 1981 Los Angeles, “The Shards” follows a fictionalized teenage version of author Bret Easton Ellis (played by Igby Rigney) as he navigates his senior year at the elite Buckley prep school. His carefully controlled world is upended by the arrival of mysterious new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) — right around the time a serial killer known as “the Trawler” begins terrorizing teenagers across the city.

The series is adapted from Bret Easton Ellis‘s semi-autobiographical novel, and it carries the same unsettling, glamorous-but-dark tone fans recognize from his earlier work like “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero.”

What To Expect In Episode 3

Since the premiere, fan theories have centered heavily on whether Robert is secretly connected to the killings plaguing Buckley’s student body. Episode 3 looks poised to escalate that paranoia further, as a beloved student’s sudden disappearance throws the senior class into chaos. With the Trawler’s identity still unknown and a mysterious death cult called the Riders of the Afterlife lurking as a possible red herring, this episode has plenty of tension to unpack.

Could There Be A Season 2?

Even though Ellis’s novel is a standalone story, the show’s creative team has hinted at more. Executive producer Brad Simpson told Radio Times the series is “certainly set up to continue on through their senior year,” suggesting a second season isn’t off the table if audience response stays strong.
