The Shards Episode 3 Ending Explained: What Really Happened To Rhonda At Wheels Roller Rink

“Help Me! Rhonda!” earns its Beach Boys-referencing title the hard way. Episode 3 of The Shards takes the Trawler’s reign of terror somewhere much closer to home for Bret Ellis and his friend group — and the ending leaves fans with a genuinely unsettling cliffhanger.

What Happens To Rhonda

Rhonda Fox, played by Ivy Wolk, is established early in the episode as a well-liked classmate nicknamed “Really Rhonda” — a nod to an exasperated teacher’s outburst toward her. Despite qualifying for special needs classes due to a neurological condition, her father paid the school to keep her mainstreamed. Bret in particular is drawn to her because, unlike others in their circle, she never outs his secrets during her characteristically blunt outbursts.

The Trawler’s calculation is chillingly deliberate: he targets Wheels specifically because Rhonda is the only patron there that night, exploiting the venue’s fading popularity and isolation. When she doesn’t make curfew, her parents alert authorities, who find evidence of a struggle at the rink but no sign of Rhonda herself.

Bret visits the scene the following day, and the show leans into atmosphere here — the rink’s disco ball, once a symbol of joy, now reads as mournful, “twirling like a flag at half-mast,” marking everything 1981 has already taken from the group.

What The Ending Reveals

By the episode’s close, the show cuts to Rhonda locked inside what looks like a dog cage in a basement. The Trawler, dressed entirely in black, slides a tray of live worms into her cage — a disturbing image that mirrors the treatment we saw earlier with Matt, the group’s first victim. It’s left ambiguous whether this is a literal scene or filtered through Bret’s increasingly unreliable narration, a device the show leans on throughout the season.

The episode closes with a haunting detail: it takes just three days for Bret’s friend group to move on and largely forget about both Matt and Rhonda — a chilling comment on how quickly trauma gets buried by teenage self-absorption.

Why This Episode Matters For The Season

Rhonda’s disappearance escalates the stakes considerably, tying directly into Bret’s growing obsession with new student Robert Mallory, whom he increasingly suspects is connected to the Trawler killings. The series, based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel of the same name, continues blurring the line between real threat and Bret’s paranoid narration — a tension that carries directly into Episode 4.
