The Scandal OTT Release Date on Netflix’s Steamy Joseon-Era Period Drama Everyone’s Talking About

Four years after stepping away from television, Son Ye-jin is returning — and she’s chosen a role that couldn’t be further from safe. In The Scandal, Netflix’s lavish new Korean period drama, she plays Lady Cho, a noblewoman whose intellect and ambition strain against the rigid boundaries of Joseon-era society. Opposite her stands Ji Chang-wook as Cho Won, the kingdom’s most notorious libertine, and rising star NANA as Hui-yeon, the young widow who becomes an unwitting pawn in their game.

Directed by Jung Ji-woo, known for genre-hopping work like Eungyo and Tune in for Love, the eight-episode series reimagines the 2003 cult classic Untold Scandal, itself inspired by the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. It swaps European salons for the hanbok-clad aristocracy of Bukchon, where a single wager between Lady Cho and Cho Won threatens to unravel the strict Confucian order governing love, honour, and reputation.

What makes this adaptation compelling isn’t just its pedigree — it’s the emotional stakes. Hui-yeon isn’t a passive victim; she’s drawn deeper into a web of desire and deception that forces every character to confront what they’re willing to sacrifice for passion, power, or protection. Expect opulent visuals, slow-burning tension, and the kind of morally gray storytelling that made the original film a landmark of Korean cinema.

The Scandal premieres globally on Netflix on September 18, dropping all episodes at once — perfect for a weekend binge.
