The Odyssey Review: Nolan Turns Homer’s Epic Into a Sound-and-Scale Spectacle

Christopher Nolan doesn’t do small stories, and The Odyssey is no exception. His retelling of Homer’s ancient epic lands as a technically dazzling, emotionally uneven journey — one that rewards a trip to the biggest screen you can find, even if it doesn’t always hit the heart the way his best work does.

The Odyssey: Verdict

The Odyssey: Plot

The film follows King Odysseus on his long, dangerous voyage home after the Trojan War, battling divine anger, mythical monsters, and constant temptation just to survive and reclaim his throne. True to form, Nolan leans into fate, sacrifice, and resilience rather than treating the material as a straightforward fantasy adventure, giving Homer’s story a distinctly modern, thoughtful edge.

What Works

The sound design is the film’s standout achievement — every mythical encounter, from monstrous growls to the Sirens’ haunting song, feels startlingly real. Paired with Göransson’s score, several sequences become genuinely unforgettable. Visually, Nolan’s IMAX 70mm camerawork turns storms and sea battles into immersive spectacle, with the film’s globe-spanning locations lending real authenticity to Homer’s mythical world.

What Doesn’t Work

For all its scale, the film’s visuals stay surprisingly dark and muted, dulling some of its best-designed scenes. Pacing is also a bit shaky — the early stretches feel weighed down by restrained character work, even as the finale delivers real emotional payoff. Nolan’s intellectual approach occasionally keeps audiences at arm’s length from Odysseus’ more personal moments.

The Performances

Matt Damon anchors the film with a grounded, weary-king performance, while Anne Hathaway brings quiet strength to Penelope. Tom Holland gives Telemachus a compelling coming-of-age arc, and Zendaya commands the screen as Athena. The supporting cast — including Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o — rounds out a genuinely stacked ensemble.
